Was born in Madrid in 1926. He studied Filosofia y Letras [Philosophy and Letters]in the Universidad Central de Madrid, and then received a degree with a specialism in Pure Philosophy from the Universidad de Murcia in 1953. He is a founding member of the avant garde theatre group Arte Nuevo (1946), and Teatro de Agitación Politica (1950) and the Grupo de Teatro Realista (1961). Sastre has adapted The Lady from the Sea by Henrik Ibsen; Creditors by August Strindberg; Mulatto by Langston Hughes; Huis clos, The Respectful Prostitute, The Victors, The Flies, The Trojan Women and The Condemned of Altona by Jean-Paul Sartre and Red Roses for Me by Sean O'Casey. His most recent narrative publications are Necrópolis (1994) and Historias de California [Stories of California] (1995) and the poetry volumes Vida del hombre invisible contada por el mismo [Life of the Invisible Man Recounted by Himself](1995), El evangelio de Dracula [The Gospel of Dracula] (1997) and Obra lirica y domestica. Poemas completos [Lyric and Domestic Writings. The Complete Poems](2005). As an essayist, he has published Drama y sociedad [Drama and Society], Anatomia del realismo [Anatomy of Realism], La revolución y la critica de la cultura[Revolution and Critique of Culture], Critica de la imaginación [Critique of Imagination], Prolegómenos a un teatro del porvenir [Prolegomenae to a Theatre of the Future], ¿Dónde estoy yo? [Where am I?], El drama y sus lenguajes [Drama and Its Languages], Ensayo general sobre lo cómico [General Essay on the Comic], La batalla de los intelectuales [Battle of the Intellectuals], Manifiesto contra el pensamiento debil [Manifesto Against Laxness of Thought], Limbos o los titulos de la Nada [Limbos or the Titles of Nothing] and Las dialecticas de lo imaginario[The Dialectics of the Imaginary]. His life and works have been compiled in Alfonso Sastre o la ilusión tragica[Alfonso Sastre or the Illusion of Tragedy] (1997). An edition of his complete works is in preparation and will be published by Hiru Argitaletxea. He has received the following awards: Viareggio Prize, Italy, 1976; Resena Prize,1977; Nacional de Teatro Prize, 1985; El Espectador y la Critica Prize, 1985; Ciudad de Segovia Prize, 1989; Euskadi de Literatura Prize, 1991; Txema Zubia Prize, 1993; Nacional de Literatura Prize, 1993; Feronia Città di Fiano Prize, Rome, 1996; Max de Honor Prize, sgae, 2003 and Quijote Prize, Asociación Colegial de Escritores, Madrid, 2005.

Edgar Allen Poe journeys to Fordham to collect his belongings before returning to Richmond, Virginia, where his first love, recently rediscovered, and the promise of a new life, free from alcohol, awaits him. After making a scheduled stop in Baltimore to take a train to New York, he disappears and then reappears two days later in hospital, delirious, and dying. What happened in those two days? In this play of great tenderness, humour and humanity, one of Spains greatest living dramatists explores Poes final odyssey through the city . . .
