The story focuses on two cousins who survived the concentration camps; one lives in England, the other became a New York journalist. When the cousin in England "disappears," the American publisher gives Hank Rubens, the main character, the “assignment” of crossing the Atlantic to find out what’s happened, becomes a good friend, then lover of a businessman’s daughter. And it’s growing evident that suspicious things are happening around that grandiose home. The trail leads the young people to Germany (in the second act.
