        Pinocchio's Ashes

Pinocchio's Ashes

Synopsis:
I love the smell of classics burning in the morning, declares Judge Wolff in the first line of Jokum Rohdes philosophical thriller Pinocchios Ashes. And while his is a war on art and culture, Wolff goes about his business with the same lustful ruthlessness as the Apocalypse Now protagonist he echoes. the Danish playwrights award-winning work is an expressionistic noir Drama about the role of art in our times and the demonic streak in human nature. the play tells a gripping story filled with melancholy, poetry and dark humor. It is set in the city of Kongstad, where a national ban has been imposed on art and culture. Judge Wolff enforces the ban by ordering severe punishments of those secretly practicing art. When an informant finds a Pinocchio doll in the workshop of local cabinet-maker Werner Brown, he reports the crime to Wolff, who sentences Brown to have his right hand cut off. Suddenly a crime wave washes over Kongstad. In the decadent and paranoid universe Rohde has created, Wolff and the other characters become human wrecks.
