Sylvia Reed, of Palmetto, Florida, is a recipient of a 2002-2003 Florida Individual Artist's Fellowship for her first play, FULL MOON RABBIT DANCE. ALLIGATORS, her second play, won the 2003 Florida Playwrights' Process award and was selected as a Gold Medalist script in the 2004 Pinter Review Prize for Drama competition. Richard Mathews, director of the Pinter Review prize, called ALLIGATORS "truly outstanding" and "memorable." Her third full-length play, THE ONES THAT FLUTTER, won first prize in Boston Theatre Works BTW Unbound 2006. It was selected for the Percolating Play Series at Theatre in the Square, Marietta, Georgia. She was born in Alabama but raised primarily in Florida, in childhood homes as far north as Quincy and as far south as Key West. She spent the bulk of her shool-age years in Hollywood in one of five homes on the grounds of the South Florida State Hospital, where her father worked as the administrator. She points to this rather bizarre and certainly isolated setting as a major influence in her compulsion to write, but it is the city of Gainesville and the University of Florida that ultimately has figured prominently in her plays. She graduated from the UF with a degree in journalism, and worked several years at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune covering news events. Though she no longer writes for the newspaper, she considers them a primary source for characters and ideas. ALLIGATORS was inspired by a newspaper story that recounted an elderly woman's strange and chilling encounter with one. Her plays have been read or produced in Atlanta, Maryland, Clearwater, Tampa, Sarasota, Bradenton and Venice. She is at work on two new plays, tentatively titled THE HERO and KINGFISHER. In addition to plays, she writes short stories. Several have appeared in literary magazines across the country, including THE FLORIDA REVIEW, SOUTH CAROLINA REVIEW, SEATTLE REVIEW, GREENSBORO REVIEW, BELOIT FICTION JOURNAL, AND KALLIOPE: A JOURNAL OF WOMEN'S ART. Her short plays, "American Flag" and "Works in Progress" are published in Smith and Kraus' Best 10-Minute Plays 2007, 2 Actors, and Best 10-Minute Plays 2007, 3 or More Actors.
