Ferdinand Raimund

FERDINAND RAIMUND   (1790 - 1836)

Born in Vienna on June 1st 1790 as Ferdinand Jakob Raimann. The son of an immigrant Czech wood turner. He was apprenticed as a baker but gave it up for acting. From 1809 to 1814 he travelled throughout Hungary with various theatrical companies. Back in Vienna in 1814 he had his first acting success in Vienna at the Theater in der Josefstadt .In 1818 had had an affair with the actress Theres Grunthal which ended violently. He was arrested and imprisoned for three days. He had a ten year relationship with Antonie Wagner, daughter of a coffee house owner but married Luise Alois. It was an unhappy marriage and she left him in 1821. He died on September 5th 1836 after being bitten by a rapid dog.
