David's Lyre

Synopsis:
When xenophobic 'patriotism' fuelled by the Napoleonic wars sweeps England, 20-year-old Jewish composer Isaac Nathan is a frustrated near-unknown. In light of Nathan's elopement with a Christian woman, Eliza, and his sister Rahel's rejection of traditional womanhood, he finds himself at odds with his father, the Cantor, a liturgical singer and traumatised refugee. Then, Nathan gets what looks like his big break, when his music attracts the attention of the most famous poet alive--Lord Byron. Apparently passionate about the liberation of 'the Jewish nation', Byron agrees to a collaboration that may solve Nathan's problems--if the young musician agrees to weld his music to lyrics that betray everything he, Eliza, Rahel, and the Cantor hope for their futures and that of the world. The outcome of this struggle will help decide all their destinies--and will reverberate into our own century.

Diamond Net, The

Synopsis:
A true story of love, war, hate, intrigue, censorship, and 'patriotism'. In 1916 London, Toronto-born 'Salome dancer' Maud Allan, lover of Margot Asquith, the closeted wife of the Prime Minister, has won fame and notoriety for her signature dance as the biblical femme fatale. Then Noel Pemberton-Billing, MP accuses her of membership in a 'cult' of 47,000 lesbians and gay men allegedly blackmailed into collaborating with German espionage. Allan has Billing prosecuted for libel, but his desperate accusations dragnet an expanding blacklist--including Margot. As distinctions between fantasy and reality, entertainment and terror collapse, Allan must fight to save her career, her relationship, and even, perhaps, her life.
