Gorky Train, The

Synopsis:
In the station of the small hamlet of Luknovo, on the main Moscow to Gorky railway line, Palenko waits for the train which will take him to a new life in Moscow, the reward for his services as an informer against 'enemies of the state'. The Moscow train is delayed, and before he can leave, Sergei Andreyovitch, one of Palenkos' victims, arrives to catch the train which will take him to the City of Gorky - and exile. The tension that results from this unplanned meeting is heightened by the unexpected arrival of an officer of the NKVD (Peoples' Commissariat for Internal Affairs), Colonel Komarev. 'The Gorky Train' won the Geoffrey Whitworth Playwriting Competition in 2001.
