Female of the Species

Female of the Species
Thirty years ago Margot Mason, pioneer of the 1970s Women's Liberation movement and fearless academic, wrote her groundbreaking work and numerous best-sellers followed. But now she has writer's block. Molly, an unannounced visitor and committed fan of Margot and her work, offers a potential solution - until Molly produces a gun and calmly informs Margot that she intends to kill her because she blames her for warping her mother's mind and ruining her life with her hit book the Cerebral Vagina. Joanna Murray-Smith's deliciously wicked comedy deftly walks the tightrope between satire and farce proving the female of the species is not only deadlier, but funnier than the male. This latest gem from the pen of one of Australia's most outstanding playwrights was inspired by Germaine Greer's experience of being held captive in her country house in Essex in 2000

Fury

Synopsis:
Welcome to the charming inner city life of Alice (Sarah Peirse) and Patrick (Robert Menzies), successful professionals who after twenty-odd years of marriage still adore each other. they enjoy their status in the intelligentsia, their home, literary success and, most importantly, bringing up their son Joe together. When Joe is accused of an inflammatory act, secrets from Alice's past emerge and suddenly the safe, politically-correct world they've built around themselves blows apart. In this brilliant play of ideas Murray-Smith deftly examines generational differences, wrong versus right, and the difference between protest and terrorism. All this with the lightness of touch and dexterity of dialogue that has made her one of Australia's most performed playwrights, both at home and overseas. Fury is a play about the people who live next door to you: their concerns, their ideologies and, most poignantly, their yearning for redemption.

Gift, The

Gift, The
Sadie and Ed meet Martin and Chloe at a holiday resort and instantly hit it off, despite coming from completely different worlds. When Martin saves Ed's life, everyone knows the debt can never be properly repaid. But Ed is rich and Chloe and Martin have a need so great it seems divine providence when Ed, wanting to show his gratitude, gives the young couple a year to decide on an appropriate gift. Yet when the year is up, surely Chloe and Martin's wish is something no-one could possibly grant? Wrapped in Joanna Murray-Smith's glinting dialogue, the Gift is a witty examination of our modern moral confusions.

Hedda Gabler

Synopsis:
A heroine. A victim. A villain. Hedda Gabler is all of these and more - a woman filled with a restless passion for life that cannot be satisfied by her marriage or her perfect home. Henrik Ibsen's towering classic will be given a sharp contemporary adaptation by Joanna Murray-Smith (the Female of the Species, Lovechild, Honour). Reared to take her place as a society hostess but without the means to support such a lifestyle after her father's death, Hedda is trapped in a loveless marriage and must live out her life according to a set of standards totally alien to her upbringing. As she strives to find a way to fulfil her desires, an old flame from the past reappears - the brilliant Lovborg whose prodigal talent serves to highlight the dull and plodding world of her husband. the connection cannot be resisted and leads to violent and tragic events even she could not have predicted or control.

Something broke deep down in the mechanism of their lives together and, seeing no way to repair it, they threw it away. But perhaps they were too hasty. Perhaps there was something they could have done. Isabel just wants ninety minutes. Soon William will be married again, so ninety is all she has to make her case. Ninety to remember what they had. Ninety to regain what was lost. Just ninety to rediscover love or call it a day, forever.

Rapture

Rapture
A vivid, timely new play that shines a revealing light on Australia's unsettled soul. the play is set among intelligent and educated people whose cynicism appears to answer all questions and who navigate uncertainty with ease. What could possibly shock or unsettle them? the answer is: faith. When two of their number claim to have found God, the consequences are profound. Ethics and certainties are tested on a battleground of inexplicable belief. Long-term friendships are pushed to the limit as the faithless wrestle with the affront of moral judgement.

Rockabye

Rockabye
Sidney can feel her career slipping down the plughole. No one loves a pop star when she's forty - not if she isn't Madonna or Kylie. So unless she wants to join the ranks of the has-beens on the casino circuit, she better get herself a hit. But what if she regains the whole world and still feels that something's missing? Baby hunger. Returning to the feisty mood of her hit the Female of the Species, Joanna Murray-Smith in Rockabye gives our self-involved, celebrity-obsessed culture a satirical duff-up.
