| ||||||
Genre: | Melodrama | |||||
| Parts: | Male | 10 | Female | 6 | ||
Parts other: | - | |||||
Notes: | Revival of play by Douglas Jerrold in a new version by Carl Miller
Synopsis: | Douglas Jerrold's nautical melodrama Black Eyed Susan (1829), a big bit in its day for an author who worked prodigiously for Punch magazine, had a strong social conscience, and had Dickens and Thackeray among his pallbearers when he died in 1857. It would be unwise to make any great claims for the piece, in which the eponymous Susan suffers the aftentions of both a rapacious uncle and an over-amorous sea captain, while her sailor husband is sentenced to death by court martial merely for defending her honour. The tone ranges from the comic to the maudlin, accompanied by jolly hornpipe music, occasional songs, and a resilient hero who faces the gallows with great sang-froid.

| ||||||
Genre: | Youth Audience | |||||
| Parts: | Male | 3 | Female | 4 | ||
Parts other: | - | |||||
Notes: | adapted from the book by Siobham Dowd
Synopsis: | This play opens with a lad in school uniform telling the audience he doesn't like theatre and why: (1) because there are crowds and he doesn't like crowds; (2) because people pretend to be other people and that's like lying and (3) because it's often metaphorical - you talk about one thing as though its something else and he finds it sometimes difficult to know what people mean. It's a pretty risky opening for an audience of children who probably don't have much, if any experience of theatre going. But Ted, it seems, does like two plays: Shakespeare's The Tempest (the relevance of which you find out later) and this one

Genre: | Historical | |||||
| Parts: | Male | 5 | Female | 4 | ||
Parts other: | doubling, extras
Notes: | - | |||||
Synopsis: | It is 1491 and the Red Fortress of Carl Miller's ambitious play is the Alhambra in Granada - Qal'at al-Hamra - still a centre of Islamic culture but about to be overtaken by the Catholic crusade of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile sweeps into Andalucia. A Genoese who believes the world is round is lobbying those Catholic Monarchs to finance a voyage to Japan by sailing out across the Atlantic. In the beautiful gardens of the Alhambra to the sound of fountains and rippling water a court that believes in tolerance, science and beauty still flourishes and in the town outside the fortress walls are three young people: Rabia (Gehane Strehler), Muslim daughter of a female book and paper seller, Luis (Jack Blumenau), son of a Jewish pharmacist, and Iago (John Cockerill) the refugee son of a Christian farmer who has been driven off his land by the invaders. There is a Muslim Emir in disguise, negotiating surrender, a female jongleur, a Spanish grandee, who buys the little cannon Luis has made and so accelerates the war, all of whom the three encounter on the expedition they set out on to the Catholics' Holy Faith fort and back. This is not literal history but a story that takes the historical facts as a starting point and touches on a whole range of issues: sectarianism, monarchic power, cultural values, sexual equality and sexual orientation and reflects many of the preoccupations of our modern world from the global economy to the cult of shopping.

Holmes is bored with all the requests he gets for help due to Watson's stories and now the West End play. Watson arrives from the theatre to tell Holmes of the murder in the hopes that he will find it interesting and it will help him snap out of his drug dependancy. Watson has a clue that he has kept to himself when the dead woman collapsed on stage she was holding a copy of "Macbeth". A mysterious visitor arrives a heavily veiled woman who asks for Sherlock Holmes help in tracking down the murderer of her sister - the woman killed at the theatre. She tells of a "Ghoul" who haunts the theatre and who had previously tried to kill her. But Holmes is less than kind to her and she goes - but something has sparked Holmes interest. He arranges to meet Harry Bell, the actor who is portraying him at his Hampstead home but this is a ruse to try and see Elena Bell Harry's wife who is now a virtual recluse. Hamstead is being terrorised by awful screams and moans thought to be the Ghoul. Harry Bell leaves to go to the theatre and Holmes and Watson manage to see Elena. They hear the Ghoul approaching the house. Harry Bell arrives back - claiming he was summoned back. Holmes goes to investigate but is attacked by the Ghoul - his headless body is found in the garden.
