Big Love

Synopsis:
To commemorate the millennium, Charles L. Mee found inspiration in the oldest extant Greek Drama, Suppliants by Aeschylus, in which fifty brides vow to murder fifty fiances on their wedding night. Updated to the 21st century and set in an exquisite villa on the Italian coastline, Big Love unfolds the story of the women's betrothal (they're all sisters!), their attempted flight and murderous pact, and one immense wedding reception/massacre -- with all the wedding music you've ever heard. A rhapsodic, invigorating journey through the politics of love.

bobrauschenbergAmerica

Synopsis:
takes us on a wild road trip through ourAmerican landscape-in a play made as one of America's greatest living artists, Robert Rauschenberg, might have conceived it if he had been a playwright instead of a painter: a collage of people and places and music and dancing, of love stories and picnics and business schemes and shootings and chicken jokes and golfing, and of the sheer exhilaration of living in a country where people make up their lives as they go.

Coney Island Avenue

Synopsis:
Coney Island Avenue is an explosion of spoken word performance, film, live and recorded music, and dance. It is a piece that takes an acute look into the varied lives and everyday struggles of the dynamic and diverse population of Brooklyn, New York. As in many of Chuck Mee's pieces, this production represents the rich multitude of nationalities, ethnicities, languages, social and economic identities that exist along this treasured avenue. As only Chuck Mee can do, with its jagged edges and deeply honest imagery, Coney Island Avenue daringly reflects what has become the microcosm of our shifting world. So much of the Earth, living on the same block! It is a juxtaposition of film and live performance, where the vicious fight to live the American Dream takes flight into grace and dance

The third collaboration between Witness Relocation and acclaimed writer Charles Mee, in which people meet, fall in love, make out with each other, find being alive awkward but funny, and dance quite a lot. Eterniday

Synopsis:
Eterniday, the second collaboration between Chuck Mee and Witness Relocation, is a play (with lots of dancing) about all of human history happening in 24 hours, the random nature of life, the fact that were all going to die, and how amazing it is to fall in love. Witness Relocation combines dance and theatre with lo-fi mayhem (TimeOut NY) and the energy of a rock show, exploding contemporary culture into intensely physical, outrageous, poetic, and sometimes brutal performances questioning the assumptions of life on the planet these days.

Heaven on Earth

Synopsis:
In Heaven on Earth, a new play by Charles L. Mee, Witness Relocation will apply its unique, pop-culture dance/theater style to a show about civilization's chances of post-apocalyptic happiness. the production was initially developed in partnership with Collective ildi ! eldi, an ensemble from France, during a residence there in 2009. Heaven on Earth is a collage play, written with Mee's unique philosophy that all art is both received and created, so texts are taken from and inspired by other texts. It combs through history to reveal a quirky but simple realization: that hope is inextinguishable because in spite of the calamitous darkness when eras pass and civilizations collapse, happiness endures in the small pleasures of life. To illustrate this, Mee weaves a collection of lyrical monologues about Roman ruins, the American Dust Bowl of the thirties, biodiversity in seeds, principles of Greek democracy, a financially ruined American widow who turns for help to family and friends, stadium building, and stock car racing. the play incorporates texts from the catalog of Revolution Seeds, Isaac Bashevis Singer, O. the Oprah Magazine, and Arthur W. Leonard.

Hotel Cassiopeia

Synopsis:
Hotel Cassiopeia is not the story of Joseph Cornell's life; rather it is life from his perspective. Having spent his entire adulthood in Queens, NY-living with his mother and caring for his disabled brother-Cornell nevertheless envisioned a vast, fantastical world that he captured in his well-known boxes and three-dimensional collages. the play is structured around what Cornell called 'sparklings,' the spectacular moments when mundane details become transcendent. these moments are the focal points of his unique work, which seeks to endow the seemingly commonplace with profound meaning

Limonade Tous Les Jours

Synopsis:
It's Paris in the springtime and love is in the air. When Andrew, an American man in his fifties, meets Jacqueline, a young French cabaret singer, romance blossoms over refreshing glasses of 'limonade' and steaming cups of cafe au lait. But relationships are always more complicated than romance-both are recovering from broken hearts, and the only thing they know for sure is that they shouldn't be together. Yet together is exactly where they find themselves. In this achingly beautiful, whimsical play, playwright Charles L. Mee reminds us of the irrationality of attraction and celebrates the bittersweet pleasure of living in the moment, even if that moment may fade.

Night, or Thyestes 2.0

Synopsis:
Inspired by Seneca's Thyestes, the piece combines sections of the classic tale with an equally dark modern vision. A whirlwind of vivid scenes bridges the torture, murder and cannibalism dogging ill-fated Tantalus to modern plagues both frightening and banal, from war crimes to YouTube vapidity. In this world premiere performance, The New Stage Theatre Company brings its bold mix of standout choreography, video projection, costuming, lighting and sound to Mees rhapsodic vision, resulting in a night of wonderfully disorienting theatre.

Under Construction

Synopsis:
Under Construction is a collage of today's America inspired by the twentieth-century painter Norman Rockwell and avant-garde installation artist Jason Rhoades. It dissects the formation of present-day America. Neither Rockwell nor Rhoades is a character in the play. Instead, Mee uses their art and utterly opposed sensibilities as a jumping-off point to talk about who we are, how we live, and what we want. Rockwell's images of small-town life conjure up thoughts of an America that was simpler and more innocent than the one we inhabit today-one that, perhaps, never existed. Jason Rhoades's installations are huge and messy; non-representational but highly evocative; unafraid to offend and impossible to ignore. Juxtaposing the fifties and the present, the play retraces the historical move from Rockwell to Rhoades while offering a portrait of a nation that is constantly reinventing itself-or permanently "under construction." A meta-collection of scenes from America, it interpolates image and ideas of past generations-from Rockwell's nostalgic Thanksgiving dinner and barbershop scenes to 1950s lessons in etiquette dating-with blogging and postmodern art. Throughout the play, actors build rickety constructions out of found objects to create a physical artistic installation piece which by the end incorporates all the props on stage. Under Construction is the third installment of the American Museum Cycle, a collection of four plays inspired by American artists. It follows bobrauschenbergAmerica, which looked at the world through the eyes of abstract expressionist Robert Rauschenberg, and Hotel Cassiopeia, which explored the mind of Joseph Cornell.
