Countess, The

Gregory Murphy     Countess, The
Company
Synopsis:

The Countess is based on one of the most notorious scandals of the Victorian age. It examines the enigmatic marriage of John Ruskin, the most respected art critic of the 19th Century, and his charming and popular wife, Effie .In 1853,when Ruskin invites renowned painter John Everett Millais, a founder of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, to paint his portrait on a retreat with him and his wife, the seeds are sewn for a love triangle and sensational scandal that eventually jolts London society. When they returned four months later, London was already beginning to whisper of the woman one man calls mad, and the other& The Countess. The Countess is based on the letters and papers of the Ruskins and Millais found in the Bowerswell Papers at the Pierpoint Morgan Library in New York, and on the numerous books and articles published about the incidents it recounts.
