Mari Lourey has been a professional writer and performer for over fourteen years, coming to theatre from a music background. Bare Witness is Maris third independent work. In 2003, she wrote the critically acclaimed play Dirty Angels, dir. Lynne Ellis, La Mama Theatre, which toured regional Victoria in 2004, assisted by Arts Victoria and the Myer Foundation. In 1999 she wrote and performed Digging into the Green Mountain, with musicians Mairéad and Dee Hannan, dir. Susie Dee, at La Mama Theatre and various music festivals. Mari has studied at RMITs Professional Writing and Editing course, which includes performance writing under Peta Murray. She has written/performed several major plays for The Torch Project, an award-winning community cultural development arts company, including The Bridge, 2003 (co-writer with Stefo Nantsou) dir. Rachael Maza, recipient of Green Room and Vic Health awards. She is also engaged in various freelance writing and community projects.

Synopsis: | Set in the war zones of the Balkans and East Timor, and framed by a horrifying image in present day Iraq, the action of Bare Witness occurs in the seconds the protagonist, Dannie, takes to photograph this image, as she wrestles with her conscience and memories of the events that have led her to this point. In a narrative driven drama drawing on the actual experiences of combat photographers and correspondents, we follow the odyssey of one woman on a path that leads her through certainty and doubt, destruction and transformation, and ultimately a deep questioning of the human condition. | |||||
