Attic Electra

Synopsis:
Attic Electra draws upon existing material, but is not an adaptation. Rather, it sets Electra in a psychiatric ward and charts her effort to deal with her life, completing the unfinished story of her own journey. (Aeschylus abandons her once Orestes has done the deed, and Euripides marries her off.) The play's concerns are feminist and familial, and keep Electra at the center of the action throughout. Two acts; five women, four men, open stage.

Disappearing Act

Synopsis:
Disappearing Act, an opera with music by John Carbon. Set in Atlantic City in 1922, the libretto follows two dramatic arcs that entail the characters efforts to test boundaries: exploring the possibility of life after death, and using the insights of art to reconcile and retrieve. The first arc follows Harry Houdini's quest to communicate with his mother, who died eight years ago, with the help of those devoted spiritualists, Sir Arthur and Lady Jean Conan Doyle. The second involves saving the decrepit Garden Pier Theater with a gala fundraiser that will feature Doyle's creations, Holmes and Watson, enhanced by Houdini's conjuring. With the help of the Doyle children's tutor, Preston, Winifred is producing the gala in honor of her brother, Kenneth, missing in action and presumed dead. Two acts; four women, six men, with a chorus of twelve (SATB); open stage.

Love's Labour's Wonne

Synopsis:
Love's Labour's Wonne, the lost sequel to Love's Labour's Lost, one year after Love's Labour's Lost ends, at the chateau and grounds of the Princess of France. A year earlier, the four couples, on the verge of pledging their troths, were interrupted by the entrance of Marcade, emissary from the court of France, bringing the news of Princess Charlotte's father's death. Everything stopped, including the entertainment of the Nine Worthies that the other characters had been preparing for the festivities. The couples agreed to meet again in a year and a day, and dispersed to a song of spring and winter. Only the title, Love's Labour's Wonne, has survived at least, so far. Certainly the earlier play implies a sequel. Scholars speculated that that title might simply be an alternative for a surviving play, such as Much Ado about Nothing, until, in 1953, a list of titles turned up that included all the possible alternatives, as well as Love's Labour's Wonne. So the play did exist. Maybe this is it. Nine men, seven women (Boyette and Moth are played by women), all characters from LLL, except for the invented addition of the Princess's brother Henry. Open stage, original music.

Round and Round

Synopsis:

In ten scenes, Schintzler portrays the sexual needs of all classes, and the hypocrisies that often accompany satisfying those needs. The adaptation places the action in an abstract and therefore timeless setting, has been written in contemporary American English, and features music composed by Evan Solot. Sam's Friends

Synopsis:
Sam's Friends centers upon the relationship of Jane and Mary, who are ensconced at a retirement community near the sea, absorbed with questions of aging, health and mortality. They derive vital energy from arguing and caring for one another. Taking up the dashing Captain Olaf's wellness cruise as a break from routine, they try to sustain their momentum by throwing a party for the Captain, now intent upon longevity research, setting off unforeseen consequences that leave them near where they began. The play is meant as an hommage to Samuel Beckett's wry vaudevillian side, as well as a chance for women to appear in a landscape akin to his. Two acts; two women, one man; one set.

What You Will

Synopsis:
What You Will anchors itself in the rivalry between Simon and Larry (50's), two professors of theater at a small Midwestern college. When an alumna, Anne (35), now a professional director in New York, returns to direct Six Characters in Search of an Author, she brings submerged grievances into the open, and finds, in dealing with Simon, her favorite teacher, that she wrestles with her father's ghost. Confronting Simon, Anne discovers that her untold grief over her dead alcoholic father fuels her zeal. Both she and Simon come to new self-knowledge as Anne refuses to replay her helplessness, and Simon clings to his addiction. The action ranges over time, triggering Simon's memories and delusions. Although the play does not assume knowledge of Pirandello, his characters shadow these. Other characters: Simon's wife, Margaret (40): his daughter by his former wife, Jen (20); a student, Bill (20). Two acts; three men, three women; open stage.
