| Kate has been engaged for three and a half years to Herbert. He will only marry her when the Dow Jones index hits 1000. She meets Charley they both want to end it all but at the same time are attracted to each other - they spend the night together. Next day Charley does decide to end it all and climbs out on to a ledge. His boss - Wingate - is looking for someone to sweet talk old ladies into giving up their life savings to his investment company. After a few words with Charley he realises that he is the one to do it and persuades him to come down from the ledge.
