Erin Layton (Playwright/Performer) is originally from St. Louis, MO and lives in New York as an actor, writer and frequent guest performing artist with Long Island University's Performing Arts Department. She received her BFA from Webster University in Painting in 2000 but once graduated, she began her professional theatre career collaborating with emerging theatre companies and playwrights in St. Louis. She moved to New York City eight years ago to study with Anne Bogart and her SITI Company after training in Suzuki and Viewpoints under actor/playwright/founder of International Theatre Collective, Jeremy Sher, and working on his play, SALTWATER. While training with SITI, Erin co-founded two theatre companies, East Third Ensemble and New Mummer Group whose break-out production of Tennessee Williams' CANDLES TO THE SUN landed her first regional theatre acting gig at Actor's Theatre of Louisville's Victor Jory Theatre. She continued to facilitate Suzuki and Viewpoints workshops with East Third Ensemble and artistic director, Ricardo Riethmuller, as tools for creating new work for the stage. Erin also adapted classical plays and devised new plays with MFA Columbia Directing graduate and London director, James Dacre. Their play LET US GO THEN, YOU AND I, an adaptation of Samuel Beckett's play, COME AND GO, premiered at Undergroundzero Theatre Festival at The Collective: Unconscious in 2007. Erin's first full length play, MAGDALEN, originated from her Fitzmaurice training work with teacher, Ilse Pfeifer and continued to develop in workshop classes with Betsy Capes of Capes Coaching, Primary Stages with Julian Sheppard, LAByrinth Theater Company and Stage Left Studios. Collaborator/director, Julie Kline (Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre, Rising Phoenix Rep) has developed MAGDALEN with Erin for over one year at their workshop lab home, Ryan Repertory Company in Brooklyn. MAGDALEN's world premiere was presented at the New York International Fringe Festival at The Gene Frankel Theatre, received critical acclaim from the NYC theatre community and audiences and is featured in the Best of FringeNYC 2012 Collection by Indie Theater Now. Her other NYC theatre acting credits include the two person adaptation of THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE (Off-Broadway, Off-Broadway Alliance Nominee), WEIRD SISTERS (East Third Ensemble), PITCH (East Coast Artists, LaMaMa), DARGER (Stage Left Studios), PEARL MERCHANT (Threads Theatre Company), among others. Erin's work as a guest performing artist with Long Island University has landed her principal roles in their productions of FIRES IN THE MIRROR, TWELFTH NIGHT (dir. Misti Wills) and THE GLASS MENAGERIE (dir. Dan Roche) all performed at the gorgeous Kumble Theatre. Erin currently works with coach and producing consultant, Molly Pearson (Produce Your Own Work). She is excited about pursuing an MFA in acting in 2013. MAGDALEN is her playwriting and solo performance debut.
