FRED LAWLESS

Nationality:   English    Email:   n/a   Website:   n/a

Literary Agent:  n/a

Fred Lawless was born in Dingle Liverpool. He attended St Patrick's School in Toxteth before his family moved to Halewood. He later attended the Wade Deacon Grammar School in Widnes (now the Wade Deacon High School since 1974). Coincidentally another Liverpool writer Alan Bleasdale had also attended Wade Deacon a few years earlier. After grammar school Lawless attended Liverpool College of Crafts and Catering and trained as a hotel manager, eventually working in several Liverpool city centre hotels. Several years later Lawless became a market trader and ran a stall at the famous Paddy's Market in Liverpool. While working there Lawless met Jonte Wilkins, another market trader, and the two of them started the UK's first kissogram company], Champagne-a-gram from an office in Aigburth. Shortly after Wilkins left for the US and eventually became the drummer for the British band A Flock of Seagulls. Lawless continued to run the kissogram business for several years, eventually employing 30 staff. One of the kissogram staff Lawless employed was Mal Young who worked for him as a Tarzan-a-gram. After leaving Champagne-a-gram Young entered the TV industry and eventually became producer of Liverpool based soap opera Brookside. Many years later Young interviewed Lawless with a view to him joining the writing team at Brookside, but Lawless instead chose to write for the London based TV series Eastenders. In addition to his TV work, Lawless has also written for BBC Radio. Nowadays he works primarily in theatre.

Synopsis:

This Christmas why not get away from it all? Let Royal Court Liverpool take you across the oceans to the exotic uncharted island of Secosu where many years ago shipwrecked stowaway Billy Riley from Walton was washed ashore. Finding himself on an island that was populated mainly by women, Billy made the most of it and now, in 2010, his legacy continues - an island community of Scousers in the South Pacific! Raised on sunshine, bananas and stories of home evolution has created a Scouse master race. The girls wear home-made Ugg boots, pyjamas and rollers, and the lads hunt and fish wearing trackie bottoms and trainers. Secosu is still uncharted which is very frustrating for Donna-Marie who longs to set sail for Liverpool, the land of her ancestors. Living in paradise is all well and good, but when the only thing to eat is bananas then it does get a little tedious. But just when she thought things couldn't get any worse a church missionary somehow manages to find his way to the island. But this is no ordinary missionary, this is Father O'Flaherty (who some of you may remember from last year's Christmas show 'Merry Ding Dong'). Following his drunken performance at last year's Christmas mass, the Bishop has banished Father O'Flaherty to the South Pacific to help convert the natives (and also to keep him out of the wine lodges of Liverpool!) Will this 'missionary position' be a success? It's unlikely because a) the natives don't need converting, they're already Scousers, and b) Father O'Flaherty just happens to know the recipe for banana wine! Forget about the winter blues this year and come and have a laugh in the sunshine with Fred Lawless' hilarious new play. Packed with catchy songs and cracking one-liners, the co-writer of 'Slappers & Slapheads' and writer of 'Merry Ding Dong' and 'A Fistful of Collars' offers you a look at the other side of our family tree, and shows you what happens when you let a randy Scouser loose on a sun drenched island full of lonely women.
