Rent

Rent
Composer-lyricist-librettist Jonathan Larson, who died tragically of an aortic aneurysm on the day of the show's first dress rehearsal, presents panoramically a year in the life of a dozen or so east Villagers. Faced with the squalor of a squatter's existence and the ravages of HIV, these incredible young heroes and heroines somehow build family and community with passion and style. Larson had an enormous amount on his mind and in his heart, and as a result Rent is imperfect, but only because it so brims and rocks with excess enthusiasms and energy. Rent features the best theatre score in years--maybe decades; it's one of the few mega-hit musicals to actually live up to its hype.

Seasons of Larson

Seasons of Larson
On 25 January 1996, the day of the first preview of RENT Off-Broadway, its composer Jonathan Larson died unexpectedly at the age of 35. Tragically he would never live to see the impact his work would have, not only on the face of musical theatre but also on a generation of young artists and performers. Nor would he get to hold the numerous awards he posthumously received. 20 years to the day, Seasons Of Larson will explore how Larson become a voice for a new generation on the stage, and celebrate his musical legacy that continues to resonate with people all over the world.

Without You

Synopsis:
This show is part of the New York Musical theatre Festival. In 1994 Anthony Rapp was working at a New York Starbucks and about to audition for a new musical by a young guy named Jonathan Larson. This is where Without You begins. In his new one-man musical, Rapp shares his audition for Rent, getting cast, rehearsals, and his view from the stage during the tribute performance on the night after Jonathan's tragic death. Without You also details Anthony's achingly beautiful relationship with his mother during this turbulent time. Featuring Anthony's own lyrics and melodies, stories adapted from his memoir, and the landmark songs of Rent, Without You is a valentine to the groundbreaking musical and celebrates all of our seasons of love.
