Maurice Levinson primarily an author and journalist-editor. He wrote comedy plays for BBC radio, for example, 'The Bridal Suite' (1965) and appeared in discussion programs on TV, mostly about the 'Cab Trade'. He adapted 'The Desperate Passion of Henry Knopp' for the theatre from his novel of the same name (Faber & Faber 1962). First published writing were short stories in The New Statesman and Nation (1944 & '45), then a well-received debut book 'The Trouble With Yesterday' (Peter Davies 1946). Later he was famous for 'Taxi!' (Secker & Warburg 1963) - listed in The Sunday Times' Best-sellers of June 1963. Maurice twice edited the magazine of the London Taxi Drivers' Association, and contributed to many newspapers. In (circa September) 1950, as editor, he launched U.K.'s The TEEN-AGE Magazine. He advised on the film set of 'Carry On Cabby', in 1963. Already artistic in painting and crafts, he helped set up the first art exhibition for Hackney Cab drivers, in London, 1973. Maurice Levinson's outstanding work 'The Woman From Bessarabia' (Secker & Warburg 1964) is the moving, true story of his young life and his mother's struggle in early 1900's London after fleeing from the pogroms of Tsarist Russia. Maurice had two children, the family latterly living in north-west London.
