Kelly's full-length plays have had staged readings at Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York and the Last Frontier Theatre Conference in Alaska with Edward Albee. The Thing With Feathers was one of six plays selected for the 2009 Seven Devils Playwrights Conference and a semi-finalist selection for the 2009 Bay Area Playwrights Festival. Kelly has spent much of his career in show production, having founded the Northwest Flower & Garden Show in Seattle, producing that show and the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show for 21 years. In 2009 he sold the San Francisco and Northwest Flower & Garden Shows in order to devote more time to playwrighting. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America and the Playwrights' Center.

Synopsis: | American scientist Dr. Abigail Nash is Director of a primate research station within the Torobe Nature Preserve in Tanzania. In June 1994 the Rwandan genocide is driving refugees across the Rwandan border into camps in northwestern Tanzania. Some starving refugees flee into the Nature Preserve and kill a chimpanzee for food. Primate research designed to uncover evolutionary roots for human aggression is threatened by human violence in the form of genocide. Other characters in the play are an African-American volunteer doctor with the relief agency "Doctors Without Borders," two American graduate students and African staff. | |||||
