Daniel Keene's plays have been performed widely throughout Australia and overseas, especially in France. His collaboration with director ariette Taylor - the Keene/Taylor Theatre Project - was critically acclaimed both locally and overseas. Eyes, The

Synopsis:
the eyes is a short and mysterious meditation on eroticism. Two middle aged men sit on a park bench. In brief poetic fragments, a first sexual encounter seemingly from years before, is recalled. Nostalgic and deeply erotic, this is a play that conjures the dark power and inherent sadness of sexuality and ageing.

Flowers & O Jim

Synopsis:
Flowers is a duologue - a simple character study of opposites. An older man (Louis) is in a park, picking flowers. He is challenged by Jim: "That isn't allowed." In four pages, Keene evokes a strong mise-en-scene where one character takes what he wants with no thought of others and the other, far more aware of what is public and what is private, will not allow him to have his way easily. O Jim is a monologue from the body and spirit of a dissociated man: "I have no light in me, I've gone dark." It becomes clear in the monologue that Jim, who we have met in Flowers, has an undisclosed psychiatric condition. His speech is raggedly poetic, visceral and despairing.

Kaddish

Synopsis:
Kaddish is spoken by a man who has watched his female companion die. His grief becomes an unbearable anguish as he reflects on the poverty that meant she was buried in a pauper's grave. We learn something of the dead woman from her words, repeated by the man, and they have all the pathos of a humility that asks for so very little: I don't need much. It's enough for me. We've been happy enough.

Killing Room, The

Synopsis:
This Beckett-style 80-minute dark comedy, inspired by the ancient story of Thyestes, envisions the end of the word and what violence may look like at its last gasp. When evil retires, what does it do all day? Imagine the end of the world. ancient, shrunken, and constantly bickering, twin brothers Cy and ed perpetuate their existence through blood transfusions and organ transplants. as young men, their greed was so insatiable and their capacity for brutality so great, they destroyed an entire civilization. they left nothing behind but the people who care for them: a doctor, a nurse, their wives. they still control the universe, or what is left of it, until their long-dead children reappear. . . Cy and ed are the darkly comic, modern counterparts of atreus and Thyestes, two brothers who fought each other tooth and nail for the throne of Olympia. In the original story, their acts of treachery escalate, creating a mind-boggling and unending cycle of betrayal. In one infamous moment, atreus kills Thyestes' sons and serves them to Thyestes for dinner.

But keep your expectations low, really low, and, who knows? - you might be pleasantly surprised by how everything works out. a hotel with reservations. award-winning playwright Daniel Keene's play is an eccentric fable about taking up residence and trying to move on.

Long Way Home, The

Synopsis:
We shall overcome. Created from first-hand accounts, The Long Way Home reflects the Australian Defence Force's recent experiences on operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor as well as humanitarian and disaster relief. As we approach the centenary of the beginning of The Great War, Australia and the world will pause and find their own ways to explore the impact of this war on their lives and minds. Sydney Theatre Company has embarked upon an historic endeavour with the Australian Defence Force to present this major new work, taking the words and experiences of servicemen and women to create a unique, inspiring and unforgettable event. British director Stephen Rayne and multi-award-winning Australian writer Daniel Keene have shaped a powerful piece of theatre, featuring military personnel recovering from physical and psychological injuries. These servicemen and women will perform alongside professional actors as part of a broader rehabilitation program that will assist their recovery. We open a door on their lives while deployed on operations and illuminate the challenges of their return to everyday life.

Mother

Mother
Mother is a one-woman play that tells the story of Christie, a homeless woman in a world detached, unforgiving and destructive. It gives voice to the fallen and dispossessed, to those who exist at the edge of safety, at the point of being undone. It speaks of madness, denial, ignorance and free-falling poverty. Utterly devastating, yet written with Daniel Keene's characteristic lyricism, Mother is wrought with tenderness, violence and loneliness in equal measure.

Night, A Wall, Two Men

Synopsis:
Night, A Wall, Two Men is a powerful duologue that examines the lives of two street people. Homeless, and sometimes hopeless, they have at least each other's company, but virtually nothing else. they reminisce, tease and compete to stay focussed on the grim business of survival. the future does not bear contemplation. This is a play of great tenderness and surprising comedic texture and a masterful study in decency, dignity and empathy.

Ninth Moon, The

Synopsis:
the Ninth Moon tells the story of a modern Mary and Joseph (Chloe and Dan) as they begin to construct a family. Aged 20, pregnant, runaways from violence and neglect, they have only love and hope to sustain them. This play charts the 9 moons of their pregnancy and sees a young couple taking their first steps into the adult world. Rain, The

Synopsis:
In the Rain an old woman begins her story with the words people used to give me things. She tells of her past, when she was very young and would stand in a field as hundreds of people filed past her to the train. Forbidden to take anything with them, they handed her the small treasures they carry. She lists some of them - spectacles, shoes, hat pins, photographs, parcels tied up with string - and she takes them home and cares for them in the vain hope that they might one day return to reclaim them. One treasure in particular holds significance for her - a small phial of rainwater from the village of the young Jewish boy who left it with her.

Share, The

Synopsis:
Two young men, Tex and Sugar, totally without ties to the world around them and without hope or purpose, plan a brutal attack on a drug dealer and his dog. they are aided by a younger boy whose only aim in life is to emulate their "cool" lifestyle. Society has trashed these young men, and their only course of action is to prey on that rejecting world, and ultimately on each other. This is an escalating portrayal of violence, mindless brutality and cruelty, tragically shadowed by the significant absence in the characters' lives - that of love.

Terminus

Synopsis:
the last train. Inside one of the carriages is a young boy carrying a box. Several seats away, a man is sitting. He moves closer to talk to the boy. He wants to see what is in the box. the boy is not interested in showing him. This is the beginning of a remarkable journey, which takes place at the end of the line, the terminus, in an area where hope would have died were there not room for dreams and wondering. each and every character encountered is searching, despite isolation and loneliness, for something better. except the man. He can give succour and yet finds none for himself. Both murderer and lover, he gives life and he takes it away. He changes people without being changed himself. Or does he become changed after all? Do his victims teach him something from the other side of the grave? This is a play of subtlety, of transcendence - it takes you by the heart, and also through your mind, and it leaves you wondering. It is a work of art.

Three Legged Stool, A

Synopsis:
In the Three Legged Stool, three timeless individuals shelter from a storm. One of them has encountered a mysterious lost boy, who has been abused and then literally thrown away, lying among the weeds and filth. As with his earlier play Cordelia, Lear is invoked, storm-lashed yet generous in his pity for the other 'houseless wretches' such as Poor Tom. the difference between one who cares and one whose need makes him cruel and selfish - a universal human difference - is dissolved in the end by the desperate coupling that keeps cold and loneliness at bay.

What he has written are the things that give meaning to his life, most particularly his missing wife and child. His list of small moments of love and beauty, intimate and ordinary, are given the resonances of poetry and affirm an aesthetic dimension to life that cannot be separated from the mundane
