Barry Kay was brought up on a dairy farm in North West TasmaniA. He trained as an actor at the Victorian College of the Arts before working in community Theatre with the Murray River Performing Group in Albury Wodonga and then Back to Back Theatre in Geelong. Back to Back is Australia's only professional Theatre company comprising artists with an intellectual disability. Barry has also written and worked with companies such as Salamanca Theatre, Terrapin Puppet Theatre, Zootango Theatre and various schools, festivals and freelance companies. He is currently Interpretive Theatre Manager at Sovereign Hill outdoor museum in Ballarat where he develops museum Theatre works interpreting the goldrush history of Ballarat and VictoriA.

Dream Up

Synopsis:
Jack dreams every night that he is trapped in an out-of-control car hurtling towards a cliff. One night he wakes up in a place where he must face his fears for the future. He and his friend Jeff and girlfriend Jill must try to escape a strange dream place where fantasies, fears, secrets and truths must be confronted and dealt with before life can go on. the play deals with these issues in a comic yet confronting way.

Hanging on to the Bottom of the World

Synopsis:
Hanging on to the Bottom of the World tells the rather staid story of Australian Federation in a way that is as theatrical, physical, visual and funny as possible while not shying away from the darker side of the story  the White Australia policy, the generally appalling treatment of the Indigenous population, and so on. It is written in a fast-paced, ensemble-style and allows for a cast of varying size and gender depending on the amount of doubling up of roles required or desired. the play could be done with an all-female or all-male cast.

Little Red

Synopsis:
Little Red places the classic fairytale of Little Red Riding Hood into a modern context of youth party culture and risk-taking. the original fairytale was written as a warning to young people, especially girls, to do as they are told, dont take risks, or suffer dire consequences. In a highly physical, theatrical, ensemble-style piece, Little Red gives a modernized version of the classic story, with various sub-plots exploring issues of risk-taking and youth culture. the play was developed with Year 10 Drama students at Ballarat Grammar school. It is an ensemble piece, and cast size and gender ratio can vary greatly.

Precious

Synopsis:
Precious is a highly physical comedy satire about Gus, a girl with an intellectural disability. Gus's parents are inventors who have devoted their lives to creating devices to protect Gus. they have to move to a new house and Gus wants to explore. She meets Slug, a local boy, and they become friends. Gus's mum is terrified of the consequences of Gus being bullied by Slug. In a farcical comic manner, Gus's spirit of adventure wins through and her parents learn to let her grow a little.

Bill is an electrician in a small country town. One day he wakes to find he has a hole in his head. At the same time, bit by bit, his whole world comes crashing in around him. the Stationary Traveller is about Bill's attempts to put himself and his world back together again.
