Notes: | Based On The Universal Pictures Film, Writer Iain Softley adapted with Stephen Jeffreys
Synopsis: | 'He had to choose between his best friends, the woman he loved and the greatest rock 'n'' roll band in the world'. Backbeat is the story of the fifth Beatle, Stuart Sutcliffe (the band's original bassist), and the two most important people in his life: John Lennon and Astrid Kirchherr. Re-imagined for the stage by the original writer and director of the acclaimed 1994 film, Iain Softley. This new production of Backbeat is a passionate and vivid portrayal of a love story born out of the famous summer when The Beatles made their name in the city of Hamburg. Inseparable friends, John and Stuart, become entwined in a fiery triangular relationship as Stuart falls madly in love with Astrid. John forces Stuart to choose between his deep loyalty for John, a future with the greatest band in history or following his heart and pursuing a life as an artist with the woman of his dreams.

Genre: | n/a | |||||
| Parts: | Male | - | Female | - | ||
Parts other: | - | |||||
Notes: | part of a three month long festival about the culture and history of Afghanistan. Entitled The Great Game: Afghanistan. The festival will be divided into three parts, each focusing on a period of Afghan history: 1842-1930 : Invasions And Independence
| After a brief Siba Shakib prologue delivered by a muralist painting his country's history, the saga starts with a tale related by four British buglers in 1842, assisted by a General's wife. The savagery that led to the deaths of 16,000 British troops and hangers-on forms a kind of introduction to the fate of a benighted country destined to be at war for generations. The story is personalised by the arrival of Nabil Elouahabi playing a local philosopher who probes into colonial motives (are they supporting the cause of God or country?). The consequence of inefficiencies by the ruling classes is quite shocking and will prefigure the perpetual wars by which life in Afghanistan can almost be measured. | |||||

Notes: | - | |||||
| Elizabeth I is tottering at death's door. Conspirators are everywhere. Lucius Bodkin, an Elizabethan stand-up comedian, becomes unwillingly involved in the political skullduggery and jiggery-pokery surrounding the ailing queen. A riotously funny satirical farce in the tradition of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and Shakespeare in Love. | |||||

| ||||||
Genre: | Play/Drama | |||||
| Parts: | Male | 4 | Female | 6 | ||
Parts other: | - | |||||
Notes: | John Gay's long-planned sequel to his 18th century ballad entertainment The Beggars' Opera
| The Convict's Opera follows Gay's pattern in many respects, not least the score which lifts popular tunes ranging from the original 18th century ballad "Over the hills and far away" (sung by Olivier in the film version) to strains of Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and the Gypsy Punks. A fine tradition which is a distinct improvement on the tuneless number of so many so-called "original" musicals. | |||||

| The technological revolution has not yet reached Chapel & Sons, an ailing family business making billiard tables. In the dilapidated workshop, three generations conspire against each other for control of the firm. The play is at once a lament for the passing of an industrial age, a retelling of the classic mythical struggle between fathers and sons and a thoroughly entertaining story. | |||||

Notes: | - | |||||
| "Tonight I'm up on stage, Robert Johnson number. I'm singing it and it hits me. Crossroads. That's where he'd go. He'd go to live at the crossroads" Jesse Davidson, last of the old-time Delta blues singers, died fourteen years ago. But legends continue to surround him - like the story about him selling his soul to the devil so that he could play guitar. And the story that he isn't dead at all. When an English rock back hits town, their leader comes looking for the truth and triggers a confrontation of mythic proportions. | |||||
