Julie Janson works as a playwright, screenwriter, producer, script editor, and assessor in Sydney and internationally. She has received numerous grants and fellowships including the Developing Writers Fellowship, Australia Council; the Australian Film Television and Radio School Literature Board attachment and the Asialink Literature Resident in Indonesia . Julie is a long time elected member of the NSW Committee for the Australian Writers Guild. Her produced plays:GUNJIeS; BLaCK MaRY; LOTUS WaR; SeaSON TO TaSTe at Belvoir St Theatre Sydney. BLaCK MaRY was also produced in arizona usA. Her most recent play the CROCODILe HOTeL was workshopped in Makassar, Sulawesi , Indonesia , with assistance from Asialink. Julies awards include GUNJIeS, Highly Commended, Human Rights award and Nominated for an aWGIe. the CROCODILe HOTeL was short listed for the Patrick White award. BLaCK MaRY & GUNJIeS has been published by aboriginal Studies Press and the CROCODILe HOTeL has been published by Coastlines Magazine. Julie was a writer in residence at Camac Centre de art, Marnay sur Seine France in 2005, here she wrote the first draft of a new play, eaTING La PeROUSe. Theatre Organisations: the Australian Performance exchange consists of director, Sally Sussman and Julie Janson. they have worked collaboratively on many cross-cultural projects to enable artists to express the connections and clashes between traditional forms and contemporary sensibilities between Asia , Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australia.

Synopsis:
an aboriginal woman bushranger and her lover Frederick Ward lead escape from the english establishment in NSW 1860s. they encounter adventures and an aboriginal nation at war .

Crocodile Hotel, The

Synopsis:
1920 - a Makassan prahu (Indonesian fishing boat) sails to the Northern Territory. An Aboriginal man has a fight with one of the Makassans. The Aboriginal man is taken to Makassar for trial. 1970 - Jane and Jim are teachers in a remote Aboriginal school in the Northern Territory. They encounter racism and the hard life for the Aboriginal community. Jane has a love affair with David, an Aboriginal teacher. David is mysteriously killed and his body is found by Indonesian fishermen. The play was shortlisted for the Griffin Award, the Asialink Playbox Award and the 2002 Patrick White Award.

Eyes Of Marege, The

Synopsis:
When an Australian Indigenous man, Birramen, fights with an Indonesian fisherman and kills him, he is taken back to Makassar to face trial. Five years later he returns to his island in the Northern Territory.

Kera Putih (the White Monkey)

Synopsis:
Thirteen year old Lyssa is on holiday with her family in Bali. She meets a local boy, Ketut, at a temple, and they become friends. When they find a caged white monkey in the garden of a restaurant, they are determined to free him. As they approach the cage, however, the white monkey is transformed into Hanuman, the monkey lord, and takes the children on an epic journey where they encounter evil spirits, fire gods, and a monkey army. This play celebrates Indonesian culture and promotes environmental awareness through the protection of native animals, and uses Indonesian gamelan, drums, dance, masks and music.

Synopsis:
Power, torture, political repression, rubies, Buddhist monks, gold, love and Australian business. Ursula Read is an Australian journalist who is visiting Burma with her lover James. They meet General Khint at dinner and become caught up in the political intrigue of Yangon.Ton Ton Swi, a young dissident woman, becomes friendly with the Australians in an attempt to publicise the democracy movement.The Australians are drawn into a web of intrigue and corruption with the military regime that leads them to the brink of destruction when a democracy rally is fired upon by troops.
