Original Playwright - Eugene Ionesco

Synopsis:

The original published script was modestly sub-titled 'a duologue in the style of Ionesco'. Certainly he learned from Ionesco - as did Beckett - but the main lesson was freedom. Aristotelian drama had three rules of unity (time, place and action). Modern drama has no rules at all and the playwright is free to do whatever he likes. Quite apart from being able to move around freely in space and time, he is released from all restrictions of logic, causality and consistency. He can change his mind as he goes along about what kind of play he's writing and his characters don't have to stay 'in character'. Fantasies can be translated into outward events and the playwright can use all the conventions and all the amenities of theatre as a giant box of tricks to play with - or experiment with.
Ronald Hayman (from the commentary, Heinemann, 1968)

Bald Soprano

In The Bald Soprano Ionesco throws together a cast of characters including the quintessential British middle-class family the Smiths, their guests the Martins, their maid Mary, and a fire chief determined to extinguish all fires - including their hearths. It's an archetypical absurdist tale and Ionesco displays his profound take on the problems inherent in modern communication.

Synopsis:

The pair enter the stage, creaky and a little cranky, against a grainy film of the chair dances of their youth. They recycle well-worn domestic rituals of mild antagonism and affection, calling each other "Pussycat" and "Cookie" - the talk less important than its repetition. Then their routine takes a different turn as they receive imaginary guests, each given a chair. Gordon grows wistful at the arrival of a past lover; Setterfield flirts gleefully with the husband, shamelessly showing her moth-eaten stockings. Gradually, the visitors grow so numerous that they need rows of chairs, and the stage becomes a theatre auditorium crowded with imagined guests and ghosts. - Sanjoy Roy, Guardian

Synopsis:

The once great King Berenger the First is 400 years old, on his last legs and ruling over a decaying kingdom. Now the party is over and the end is nigh. in his youth he reigned over millions of subjects, battled thousands of enemies, single-handedly split the atom and invented the car. He even controlled the weather. But now the heater is broken, the cows have stopped producing milk and the sun is late. While his two queens bicker about whether he should be made aware of his imminent demise, it is clear that Berenger wont surrender without a fi ght. But the fact is, this is the last day of his life and the end of the play could mean the end of everything. ionescos darkly hilarious and sparklingly witty comedy makes fun of all the things that tragedy usually takes seriously.

Synopsis:

A man strives to return home, in search of his past, hopeful of his future, and longing for those he left behind. As his journey unfolds, he finds his path repeatedly blocked and his identity endlessly questioned. His luggage and his status are lost as borders are crossed, languages confused, and modes of travel conspire to thwart him. Will he ever reach his destination? ...will his luggage? ...and will his identity arrive with him? Informed by contemporary stories of migration and repatriation, The Man with the Luggage explores our relationship with home, with nationality, and with authority. It also delves into our dependence on travel and the multitude of obstacles that await us on our journeys through stations, through ports, and through life.

Synopsis:

When a rhinoceros charges across the town square one Sunday afternoon, Berenger thinks nothing of it. Soon, however, rhinoceroses are popping up everywhere and Berengers whole world is under threat. What will it take for him to stand up to the increasing menace of rhinocerisation? Ionesco's iconic satire on apathy and conformity is given its first major UK revival since its Roval Court vremiere in 1960.
