| Synopsis: | Set in 2066, Prep. tells the story of the children of the elite: how society has programmed them to treat each other, and what happens to the parts of themselves they must make disappear. Inspired by abstracted themes from Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and taking stylistic hints from Gossip Girl, Prep. asks the audience to watch its characters attempt survival despite the outrageous expectations set for them. In a "breeders-only" world where the rules of sexual identity are imposed and inflexible, political war games recruit young, and childhood friends are quickly pitted against one another. - nytheatre.com | |||||

| Synopsis: | Food For Thought by Kim Ima and Onni Johnson is an interactive theatrical event with live music, actors, special guest performers and food. In the setting of the Club at La MaMa, the audience is invited to join the company in their world of yearnings, culinary and otherwise. Don't be surprised if you are asked to sample some food. Don't be surprised if you ask for more. Chances are they will happily oblige. The Food for Thought company is an eclectic mix of performers and musicians who all share a love of food and a curiosity for what each member brings to the table. At each performance, the audience will be able to sample the food, including some that is cooked during the show. On some nights, molé will be served. On others, guest cooks decide the menu. An eager woman in a bubushka from an imagined land tries to please the crowd with a cookie. Another teaches us all the finer points of eating an apple. A Croatian man paints a picture of what he would show us of his village if he could. Music and the smell of cooking food bring the audience and company together for the ending celebration and tasting. Press release | |||||

| Synopsis: | When the lights come up, the stage is empty except for a table with two sheets of newspaper laid out on it. Then Phelim McDermott, Steve Tiplady, and Guy Dartnell appear, and with a few quick, deft motions the sheets are transformed into two animated creatures and then into a single one. It's a puppet, but not like one you've seen before, and even though we see its three handlers behind it, it moves with a logic and locomotion of its own; it even has a personality (and a sweet one at that). Later the Improbable threesome will create windows, door, doorknobs, gardens, staircases, hallways, rooms, and even an entire house out of sealing tape, and each new creation brings a childlike sense of wonder and delight at the sheer inventiveness of it all. It's all the more joyous because this is not Ed Sullivan Show gimmickry. It's real theatre: a new way to tell a story. nytheatre.com | |||||

| Synopsis: | The scene is a loft in the Soho section of Manhattan, where a blocked writer named Bartholomew Dante (but called Beatrice) has fled to escape his wife of fourteen years and to come to terms with his art and his homosexuality. But his eagerly sought tranquility is interrupted by a series of unexpected visitors: first a young runaway, Di, who is escaping from prep school and uptight family; then an astonishingly precocious teenager with a German accent (Puer) who informs Beatrice that he is his son by a German terrorist with whom Beatrice had a brief but intense fling; and finally his estranged wife, Patricia, a Mafia-connected lawyer who is running for Congress and wants Beatrice back so as not to lose the Catholic vote. Caught in a sometimes poignant, sometimes hilarious crossfire of temptations and demands, Beatrice struggles to sort things out, for himself and the others, arriving, in the end, at a resolution that is filled with wisdom, rich with humor and touched with nobility—all at the same time. | |||||

| Notes: | Forum Theatre is a style of theatre developed with a community dealing with their particular social/political issue (i.e. alcoholism, AIDS, violence, etc.). It is a theatrical technique for analyzing and exploring alternatives to systemic power and dysfunction within society - not used as personal therapy or psychodrama. Forum Theatre breaks down the imaginary 'fourth wall' between the audience and the stage to place the audience member directly in the shoes of the central characters. The Forum play (the anti-model or worst-case scenario) is played once for the audience to identify the problems inherent in the issue. Then it is played a second time, so the spectator can stop the action whenever they feel a character has been disrespected, manipulated or oppressed in some way, and replace that character to try to change the situation (this transformation of the audience from spectators to 'spect-actors' is called an intervention). In this way, the spect-actor can rehearse for the reality of the issue facing their community; role-playing various alternatives and solutions to the problems posed. As the 'experts', it is the spect-actors who will discover and form realistic options that can then be used by their community - pragmatic problem-solving and peer-education, through the entertaining medium of theatre is the strength of the Forum Theatre process. Consequently, Forum Theatre must be carefully facilitated between the audience and actors through a liaison called The Joker. | |||||
| Synopsis: | A Forum Theatre play (see definition below in Notes) for middle and high school students (Grades 7+) and youth on the issue of homophobia - specifically: homophobic bullying - and the cycles of violence through physical, emotional and psychological abuse. The first part of THE 10% REALITY follows high school student Tanya dealing with her dilemma of whether to turn against her best friend Sam, who is gay and in need of help. With pressure at home from her traditional father to peer-pressure at school and her easily influenced younger brother Ricky, Tanya is forced into making critical decisions. The second part of the play allows the audience to explore different choices that various characters could make for a positive outcome. | |||||

| Notes: | As Del Rey is a product of Joshua's imagination, Joshua appears "normal" while in Del Rey's company - bearing none of the characteristics or physical attributes associated with DS. This is how Joshua views and sees himself - "just like everyone else". Through the perfect world of his imagination, the audience has a deeper understanding of Joshua's thought processes unencumbered by his DS. There are instances where Del Rey serves as a "witness" - observing events as they unfold - but only when Joshua is present. Del Rey represents a "normal" Joshua, studying the "abnormal" events occurring within Joshua's reality. Regarding the music in the play, the characters Joshua, Del Rey and Roger all play the guitar - though the actors do not have to be proficient at it. Playing chords will suffice. I have chord progressions and recorded music on CD by request. | |||||
| Synopsis: | Joshua Cinrik is about to celebrate his 21st birthday on his terms - warts and all. Joshua has Down Syndrome (DS) and lives at home with his mother, Doris. Compared to others with DS, Joshua functions at a level somewhere in the mid-range as it relates to his verbal, social and cognitive skills. He works at Wal~Mart, volunteers at the local recreation center, and loves to sing and play the guitar - a passion he acquired from his father, Roger, a jazz guitarist, who abandoned the family when Joshua was 10 and has not been seen or heard since. Living a life compounded with DS presents a unique set of circumstances for Joshua. Not unlike most children, Joshua confides in a make-believe friend, "Del Rey", a hefty, black, street musician. Del Rey mentors and advises Joshua on music and life, while providing an unconditional ear for Joshua to vent to. Joshua's older brother, Eric, is devoted to Joshua. Having taken a year off his senior year in college to help at home after his father left, Eric's resentment toward his father's abrupt departure is deep-seated, though he hides his hatred by immersing himself in his work. As Joshua's 21th birthday nears, Doris decides to throw a surprise party. Out of the blue, she receives a phone call from Roger, who invites himself to the party with the hope of re-establishing a relationship with Joshua. Eric is incensed upon hearing this news, but Doris is insistent that Roger's visit is for Joshua's sake, though she is unsure as to Joshua's reaction upon seeing his father. As anticipated, Joshua's birthday party is memorable on a number of fronts. Eric gets drunk and loses his temper; Roger never loses sight of his mission to reconnect with Joshua; Doris maintains her dignity and composure throughout an evening that is far from "normal". And Joshua - he treats his father like he would treat anyone else - with compassion and forgiveness. The way he would want to be treated. In the finale scene, we witness Joshua's actual 21st birthday party - one in which he and Doris are the sole guests. The "family reunion birthday party" was an elaborate scenario constructed from Joshua's imagination. His father never returns and Eric committed suicide 10 years prior, having broken down from the loss of his father and the pressures of being both a father and brother to Joshua. The "reunion" was Joshua's glimpse into what his "ideal world" might look like. Playwright | |||||

As the performance proceeds, Charlie gets drawn back into his relationship with Sarah. They actually manage to perform much of the play, with their personal story invading the Dickens tale, informing it with dual levels of meaning. | |||||

| Notes: | Sure Thing; Words, Words, Words; The Universal Language; Philip Glass Buys A Loaf of Bread; The Philidelphia; Variations on the Death of Trotsky. | |||||
| Synopsis: | Sure Thing: Two people meet in a cafe and find their way through a conversational minefield as an off-stage bell interrupts their false starts, gaffes, and faux-pas on the way to falling in love. Words, Words, Words recalls the philosophical adage that three monkeys typing into infinity will sooner or later produce Hamlet and asks: what would monkeys talk about at their typewriters? The Universal Language brings together Dawn, a young woman with a stutter, and Don, the creator and teacher of Unamunda, a wild comic language. Their lesson send them off into a dazzling display of hysterical verbal pyrotechnics-and, of course, true love. Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread is a parodic musical vignette in trademark Glassian style, with the celebrated composer having a moment of existential crisis in a bakery. The Philadelphia presents a young man in a restaurant who has fallen into "a Philadelphia," a Twilight-Zone-like state in which he cannot get anything he asks for. His only way out of the dilemma? To ask for the opposite of what he wants. Variations on the Death of Trotsky shows us the Russian revolutionary on the day of his demise, desperately trying to cope with the mountain-climber's axe he's discovered in his head. | |||||

| Synopsis: | 'Dr and Mrs Faustus' is a modest attempt to follow the tradition of using the well known legend as a vehicle for presenting contemporary epistemological problems. It deals, at one level, with the predicament of post-industrial society's fetishism with consumerism and credit, while at another level it takes a fresh look at the age-old problem of human free-will. The play is set in suburbia - the natural habitat of middle-of-the-road, middlebrow, middle-class consumerist values. Dr and Mrs Faustus are a dysfunctional couple: he is a failing lecturer in marketing at the University of North Cheam, while Mrs Faustus is a failed celebrity falling into middle age and middle spread. In the meantime Lucifer is thinking of a new business strategy to take over the world. So what is God up to? | |||||

| Synopsis: | Cultures mix, match and clash at the University of Kansas in the early 1980s. Jerome, a second-year graduate student, is a third-generation Japanese-American from Hawai‘i. His roommate Yan is Taiwanese and still struggling comically with the English language. They meet the outgoing and assertive Cathy, born and raised in the Midwest, and her roommate Rei, a Japanese national who speaks English well but with an accent. As the four spend time together, they attempt to surmount difficulties created not only by language barriers but also by national identities and cultural mores. Jerome is self-conscious about others' interpretations of his Japanese appearance outside of Hawai‘i. He begins a relationship with Cathy but is later drawn to Rei, who is pressured by her parents about being with Jerome because, to Japanese people, he is a foreigner. As the school year progresses, the friends' mutual understanding grows, but not without difficulties. A Kumu Kahua world premiere. - http://www.aatrevue.com | |||||
