Synopsis:

A business man decides to commit himself to a mental hospital because he can no longer endure the loss of self, arising from the break-up of his business. His wife of twenty-five years takes his decision as a rejection of herself and their marriage. She struggles to have him start a new life with her. The play begins when they are about to leave for the mental institution. A hitchhiker forces himself upon them and tries to change their lives.

Synopsis:

Paul Odom, a young black war veteran, finds the activism of his white and very pregnant wife, Connie, a source of contention in their marriage. The birth of their son stirs deep changes in each of them and they encounter each other with an honesty neither was willing to risk before. Paul's father, who lives with them, and Connie's mother, as well as a young black girl upstairs, join the confrontation.
