Laurence Housman was born on July 18th 1865. He was the younger brother of poet A E Housman. Both brothers were gay. He studied book illustration and his first big success was to illustrate "Goblin Market" by Christina Rossetti. But his eyesight began to fail and he turned to writing. He fell foul of the Lord Chamberlain on many occasions and may have been the most heavily censored of all playwrights. This was because his plays biblical plays were considered blasphemous. In 1945 he opened Housmans Bookshop -a radical pacifist shop that is still going strong today.
