Notes: from novel D'Entre les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac
Synopsis: For the final instalment in its trilogy of shows based on the original sources that inspired landmark films (the previous two being 'The Third Man' and 'Get Carter') Red Shift has turned to the classic French crime novel behind Hitchcock's iconic psychological thriller. Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac's 'D'entre les Morts' (1954) juxtaposes the occupation of France by the Nazis with the story of the possession of a man's mind by the idea that the woman he loved has been reincarnated. In Jonathan Holloway's elegant stage adaptation, the tale unfolds as part of a lecture given by French psychiatrist Dr Jacques Ballard. Ballard introduces this case study of 'personal psychosis' before whisking us off in imagination to the sanatorium where his patient Roger Flavières has taken refuge. There he gradually begins to re-enact with Flavières the events that have caused his mental dissolution. As they talk, the source of his madness, the appropriately named Madeleine, rises spectrally from a closed. coffinlike bath. It's a splendid coup de theatre, evocatively accompanied by Jon Nicholls' haunting widescreen music. Robert Shore, Time Out London
