Synopsis: | Based on the author's mother's experiences as "madam" and midwife. As described by one journalist: In her dual occupations, Holland's mother was privy to information and gossip from women of the town. "My mother didn't want me listening in on those conversations, but I'd be there, pretending I was asleep," Holland said. Incest was a common topic. "The Reconstruction of Dossie Ree Hemphill" springs from those overheard conversations. In the play a young woman has sex with her father. So does her younger sister, creating rivalry between the sisters. The older sister leaves the South and tries to overcome her feeling of worthlessness. | |||||
