Synopsis: | Tully is on weekend vacation with his best friend, L.D., and Sudy, the girl L.D. is sleeping with. Suspecting that Cal, the tenant of the neighboring cottage is "queer," Tully and L.D. harass him. When they leave, Sudy apologizes, but Cal rejects her. Then Lef, Cal's ex-lover, shows up and Tully nearly ends up "singing soprano" for the rest of his life for his continued remarks about Cal. During a beach pearty in the evening, Sudy ingratiates herself with Cal and Lef forgives Tully. Sudy and Tully tell how L.D., the guy everybody loves, is incapable of returning love and can only manipulate people to bolster his idea of himself. Frustrated by this relationship, Sudy seduces Cal, and Tully goes off into the dunes with Lef. In the morning all four have an awakening sense of themselves and their lives. Cal takes Sudy to a bus and plans to see her the next weekend. When Tully recognizes the futility of his attachment for L.D., he goes with Lef. Unaware that Sudy's and Tully's illusions about themselves and their love for him have end-ed, L.D. goes to bed.

Synopsis: | The audience comes into a vandalized and debris strewn theater. When they are settled, a man and two women enter with brooms and pails. While they clean, they tell about disasters which made a spectacular production "Return of the King of Kings," impossible. In its place they review their own lives. As each recalls important childhood, adolescent and adult experiences before they met, they assume roles of each others mothers, fathers, sisters, girl friends and boy friends. After adultery, divorce, impotence and affairs as they develop careers, they have all reoriented their lives and vowed "to have as much respect for each other and each others' vocations as monks and nuns do." They explain that what they say "may mean something to only one or two now and maybe a few more later on." Having completed cleaning the theater, they leave.
