Lucas Hnaths recent plays include A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay about the Death of Walt Disney, Death Tax, Red Speedo, Hillary and Clinton, Sake Tasting with a Seance to Follow, The Courtship of Anna Nicole Smith, Odiles Ordeal, Tonguetied, and Three Attempts at Corrective Eye Surgery. A resident playwright at New Dramatists since 2011, Lucas work has been seen in production, workshops, and readings at Ensemble Studio Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Cleveland Public Theatre, Target Margin and Ontological-Hysteric Theater. He has also enjoyed playwriting residencies with The Royal Court Theatre and 24Seven Lab. Lucas is a two-time winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Grant for his feature-length screenplays, The Painting, the Machine, and the Apple and Still Life. He is also a recipient of an EST/Sloan Project commission for his play, Isaacs Eye. Lucas received both his BFA and MFA from NYU's Department of Dramatic Writing and is a lecturer in NYUs Expository Writing Program

Synopsis: | It's 2010. December. Infirm Maxine thinks her daughter is paying nurse Tina to gently nudge her into the grave before the new year. Thinks she's doing this so her daughter doesn't have to pay hefty estate taxes, taxes that take effect on January 1. Nurse Tina is doing no such thing, but when Maxine offers Tina a portion of her sizable estate on the condition that she lives until the 1st, Tina changes her tune. But of course, the plan doesn't go according to plan. Death Tax is a darkly comic play about death and taxes and how we live with both. | |||||
