A native Angeleno, Richard grew up on the west side of Los Angeles, graduating from Palisades High School and then UCLA, with a BA degree, Cum Laude, in Economics. Though his first full length play, Morning Glories -- at the iconic Déjà Vu Coffeehouse in the late 70's -- earned Richard a DramaLogue Award for Playwriting, he did not settle into the craft on a full time basis until 2004, after a successful business career spanning several decades. Since that time Richard has become one of Los Angeles' most prolific playwrights, having written more than four dozen short and full-length plays, over two dozen of which have seen full productions throughout the country. Richard has also earned a number of awards for playwriting, such as the prestigious Stanley Drama Award in 2010, for his new play, The Restoration of Sight. In addition to his many readings and productions in the Los Angeles area, Richard's work has been performed in New York City (Abingdon Theatre; Access Theatre; Kraine Theatre; Emerging Artists Theatre); Chicago (AbbieFest); Boston (Boston Theatre Works); Spokane (Spokane Civic Theatre); Omaha (Shelterbelt Theatre); Columbus (Raconteur Theatre); and many others. His play, London's Scars (Winner of Reverie Production's 2008 "Next Generation" Playwriting Competition and an O'Neill Playwrights' Conference Semi-Finalist), received its World Premiere at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles in 2010. As did his latest play, The Closeness of the Horizon, in 2012. Other produced plays include: Before We Go Home, part of the Moving Arts'- conceived Car Plays at the La Jolla Playhouse and REDCAT; The Concept of Remainders (Ovation Award nomination and L.A. Weekly Theatre Award nomination, for playwriting) at the Chandler Studio Theatre for The Production Company; Atonement (L.A. Weekly Theatre Award nomination for playwriting) at Theatre 40; The Monkey Jar (Playwrights Center Conference Semi-Finalist) at Theatre 40; and The Quality of Light (Ovation Award nomination; Garland Honorable Mention, for playwriting) at the Long Beach Playhouse. Two additional new plays being developed by Richard - a dark comedy, Beach in Winter, and his drama, Into the Land of Nod -- were also named Semi-Finalists for the O'Neill Playwrights' Conference in 2011 and 2012, respectively. And in 2012 his new comedy, Memorizing Rome, completed a "First Look" run at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks, California. Richard is a member of the Ensemble Studio Theatre (LA) and currently lives in Pacific Palisades with his wife Susan.
