| Synopsis: | The play spans the years 1903 - 1915 and is based on events in the life of a disabled woman who was a celebrity. Constance Smedley was a successful artist, feminist journalist, novelist, playwright and theatre-worker. She contributed significantly to the women's movement, the international peace movement and the avant-garde theatre of the day. In 1904 she founded the International Lyceum Club for Women Artists and Writers, which still survives world-wide. At the height of her fame, Constance surprised everyone by resigning from the Lyceum Club and marrying a gay and penniless artist called Maxwell Armfield. They enjoyed a marriage that was unusual but intensely romantic and mutually supportive. Constance and Max were committed pacifists and internationalists. The play closes with them on the brink of departure for America so as to continue their work away from the horrors of the First World War. | |||||
