Only Heaven Knows

Sydney, Australia, 1944. 17 year old Tim has left home and gone to try his luck in the big city. He had been brought up by his aunt and uncle. At home he was bullied by his uncle and after his cousin lost his legs fighting in the War he felt out of place. His uncle tells him to never come back He gets a room in the Kings Cross district in the house owned by Guinea a night club singer. He meets her male friend Lana. Cliff and Alan are friends who share an apartment. They were both court martialed, imprisoned and then thrown out of the army when they were discovered engaging in mutual masturbation. They are both in their late twenties. Tim gets a job in a delicatessen and Cliff spots him there despite the gap in their ages they fall for each other. It is New Years Eve and the five friends go to a fancy dress party. It is raided by the police though luckily none of them get arrested.
1956. Cliff and Tim are living in rented accommodation - they have to be discrete as they have lost previous places when it came out they were gay. Tim is pretending to be Cliff's cousin. But it is making strains on their relationship. Alan has been persuaded to take electro-shock treatment to cure him of his homosexuality. Guinea and Lana are running a theatrical hire shop. Cliff goes to visit Alan. Alan is in pain and is abusive. A male friend is arrested for doing an impersonation of Doris Day in a public place. Tim has had dreams of becoming a playwright and has been offered a job as assistant stage manager in London - but it will probably mean leaving Cliff in Sydney. Lana finds Alan is a terrible state the electro-shock treatment has made him very ill. He manages to get him to the shop to get help for him. Tim has decided to go to London. Still in love he and Cliff promise to be together again soon. At the docks to see him off Cliff says they better not embrace in case they get arrested - but they succumb.
