Susan Hansell began writing for theatre by constructing text/s for dancers, choreographers, and performers (herself and others) in San Francisco in the 1980's. Some of her works from this period have been published in Heinemann's More Monologues for Women by Women (among other publications), and produced as A Day In, Affair on the Air, Drop It, Don't, 14 Ladies in Hats, Pink Rope, and Trolls (at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Poetry Center of San Francisco State; Artists Television Access of San Francisco; Intersection for the Arts in San Francisco; Project Artaud in San Francisco; and at The Harold Clurman in New York City, among other venues). In New York City in the 1990's, Susan Hansell began writing full-scale plays, including My Medea, a selection of the 1996-97 Best American Short Plays series, subsequently staged by the CSULB Players in 2005. A commissioned work, American Rose: Our Gals on the Homefront, 1941-1945, was produced at the Ohio Theatre in New York City by Sightlines Theatre Company in 1997. Her script for American Rose went on to win Honorable Mention in the 1998 Jane Chambers National Playwriting Contest. Susan Hansell is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America. She has taught in the Creative Writing Department at San Francisco State University, in the English Departments on two CUNY campuses (Brooklyn College and Kingsborough Community College), in the English Department at Long Beach City College, and most recently, at California State University, Long Beach, in the Departments of English, History, and Theatre. Her degrees are a B.A. with High honors in Sociology from U.C. Berkeley, an M.A. in English: Creative Writing from San Francisco State University, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing: Playwriting from CUNY - Brooklyn College, in which program she subsequently taught the M.F.A. playwriting tutorials. Susan Hansell is presently at work on a new play, Waiting for Two, an excerpt of which is published in Spot Literary Magazine 3.1 (Spring 2009). The playwright was born in Stockton, California. In 2005 she married the noted scientist and U.S. Judo coach, Gerald Uyeno; they reside together in Tucson, Arizona.

Synopsis:

90 minute, ensemble-cast play follows the lives of five diverse American women during the WWII period (juxtaposed with additional roles iconic of a variety of historically accurate individuals in the events of that period), who enter war production workplaces and war situations during the 1940s.
