Synopsis: | Conceived as a language piece (the Irish dialect is surely the next best thing to music), this story is driven by a powerful narrative: events that took place in 1895 Ireland, when the fatally burned body of a young woman was discovered in a shallow grave near her cottage-and the jealousies, myths, and mysteries surrounding her death. The play occupies three distinct worlds: the confines of the laborer's cottage where Bridget Cleary has taken ill; the brutal stage of the courtroom, where close-knit family and friends are encouraged to betray one-another; and the mysterious "land of the Banshee", where the spirits dwell and beckon. Their lyrical speech belies the lucklessness, the harsh geography, the isolation and frustration, and the anger of a people who have, historically, been up against it. Religion, paganism, politics, and love are all suspect in this story that imagines what took place in a small village-and the international repercussions that resulted.

Poor Donny, he's such a dreamer. In fact, he has a dream of becoming a famous musician one day. And so it's decided: he'll escape the farm and follow that dream right to Brementown, the music mecca. Along the way he encounters Minnie, once a prize show dog, now no longer the pick of the litter, and the pair sets off. Before long before Nell catches up with them. Recognizing the writing on the wall back at the farm, she decides to take her chances on Donny's big idea, too. Of course, just because it was Donny's idea doesn't mean the others don't have their opinions, as well. And soon Rusty the operatic rooster talks his way into the band. As the animal friends bicker and sing their way to Brementown, foul things are afoot. The newly self-appointed Mayor of the town, Fritz, and her brother, Karl the Crusher, have decided to banish music from Brementown forever. Once they've arrived, it becomes very clear to our friends that something is not quite right. Where are all the people? Where is all the music? Why is that songbird tied up with its beak glued shut?! The friends realize that only they can thwart Karl and Fritz, save music, and with their individual talents pooled together, bring sweet song back to Brementown.
