| Notes: | In 1995, Stephen Fry famously walked out of the play at the beginning of its West End run, after a bad review in the Financial Times for his performance. It was reported at the time that he suffered an attack of stage fright, but he has since disclosed that it was bipolar disorder. He ran away, leaving only an apology. Fry walked out of the production for good, provoking its early closure, and incurring the disgust of his fellow actor, Rik Mayall. He vanished, and contemplating suicide, he disappeared off to Belgium. According to his official website, "the experience still haunts him, but the depression has now faded to embarrassment and the anger to forgiveness." | |||||

![]() | Based on the critically acclaimed diaries of late playwright Simon Gray - Fat Chance, Enter A Fox, The Smoking Diaries and Coda - The Last Cigarette was completed just before Gray's death from cancer last year and shows the playwright facing life - and death - with unflinching courage and defiant humanity. Sardonic, humane, intelligent and witty, The Last Cigarette shows that even when writing about his own mortality, Gray did not lose his prodigious talent to entertain. | |||||

| Synopsis: | It's midnight in a library in Mussolini's Italy. Two Jewish intellectuals - Bernard Berenson, the renowned art critic, connoisseur, writer, and collector, and multimillionaire Joseph Duveen, the world's most pre-eminent art dealer, come face to face over a priceless Renaissance painting. Duveen has brought it to Berenson for him to examine - though he knows that this may shatter their 30-year-old and highly secret - business arrangement. The storm clouds of war are gathering. The two men who virtually invented the international art market pore over an enigmatic masterpiece. How much does the true value of a work of art depend on its attribution'? What happens when that ~ attribution is open to doubt? Simon Gray's new play explores issues of true value and provenance, and of forgery and fraud - artistic ard personal - via the real life relationship between two of the greatest players in European 20th century art. | |||||
