| Five actresses portray Albertine at different times of her life whilst conversing freely with each other and with their sister Madeleine. Albertine at 30 is recuperating in the country after viciously beating her 11-year-old daughter; Albertine at 40 is a virago at war with the world; at 50 she has rejected her past by reinventing it; at 60 she has given in to depression; at 70 she's found a kind of peace. First performed in London in 1986 at the Donmar Warehouse. | |||||

Synopsis: | It is the spring of 1963. The young Quebec author Marie-Claire Blais, bursting with energy and talent, has just won a coveted Guggenheim fellowship. She chooses Cambridge, Massachussetts, as the place where she will begin her writer's apprenticeship with her mentor, Edmund Wilson. American Notebooks is much more than a fascinating autobiographical account of the intellectual flowering of a great writer. An album of exquisitely drawn literary portraits of companions, intellectuals, writers, musicians, artists and social activists of the period; Edmund and Elena Wilson, Mary Meigs, Maud Maugan, Barbara Deming, Truman Capote, her first Quebec publisher, now Senator Jacques Hebert, and many others, it also introduces many of the real life personalities who have inspired her fictional characters

Notes: | Original Playwright - Michel Tremblay
| Presenting both their past and present lives, Carmen and Manon agonize-within and between themselves-over the relationship between their parents, Leopold and Marie-Lou. The two sisters are torn in their loyalties to a mother who was uninvolved and a father who was emotionally and physically abusive. They struggle with the image of their father as a monster and who has caused a rift between the sisters, who, until a visit to the family home one weekend, have been unable to confront their anger. Scenes from the past reveal the father as a dominant sexual ogre and the mother as submissive, repressed, and resentful. We learn that to alleviate his own frustration, Leopold drove Marie-Lou over a cliff, ridding himself of the constant pain in his life. The two daughters are left with the legacy of torment, as they struggle to identify their father as a monster and then move on with their own lives. | |||||

| Making their way through the dunes are Nawal's twin children, Janine and Simon, who want to solve the mystery of their origins. In retracing the bitter history of their mother (enveloped in silence until her death), other characters come into the story-witnesses or key players able to assist in the investigation. Carried aloft by poetic language, the inquiry pursued by Janine and Simon unfolds in a dreamlike atmosphere that cultivates the mystery surrounding a knife thrust into the heart of childhood. | |||||
