He was best known for being the writer of the Benny Hill Show which he worked on from 1955 to the mid-sixties, leaving before it transferred to ITV and began to be accused of sexism. he also appeared in a number iof small parts in the show.In a career which began in the fifties, after being a stage electrician, a petty officer in the Royal Navy, a Special Branch detective and a crime reporter, he wrote for The Avengers, Ted Ray, Tony Hancock, Tommy Cooper, Frankie Howerd, Roy Hudd, Arthur Askey, Bernard Braden, Sis james, Terry Scott and Bill Maynard. He wrote two Carry On scripts - Carry On Behind and Carry On Columbus. He was most proud, however, of his work for theatre. He write three plays, the most popular of which was the farce A Bedful of Foreigners (1973) which had an eighteen month West End run with Terry Scott and June Whitfield, and did a number of tours with actresses like Deborah Watling (Far East tour) and Mandy Rice-Davies (national tour). The others, also farces, were Kindly Keep It Covered and Key for Two.
