Synopsis: | The play is set in a nunnery in the Southwest of the U.S.A., circa 1870 when the church and its representatives were highly respected and desperados and highwaymen were the scum of society and the army were in charge of keeping order. The sisters of charity and appreciations not only possess a holy bell of pure gold but oil has also been discovered in the convent garden and the immense profits available are of great interest to the agency of Schmidt, Schmidt and Schmidt at the local engineers office. Both the bell and the oil also come to the attention of a pair of unscrupulous antique dealers also. Meanwhile the youngest sister in the nunnery is fed up with the daily rituals of prayer and meditation and longs for a night out in the big city. Life is never easy for the Mother Superior at the best of times but all of these problems are surely some sort of penance. | |||||
