Abducting Diana

Millionaire media boss, Diana Forbes-McKaye, is kidnapped - but the ruthless magnate proves more resourceful than her clumsy abductors. Are things what they seem? Who masterminded the abduction? Who has the television rights to this premier media event? Into this cocktail of chaos, Fo adds a gun-toting priest, a deranged altar boy, a kidnapper hiding in the fridge, pyromania and an explosive climax.

Accidental Death Of An Anarchist

Highly contentious and subversive at the time of its first production in Milan in December 1970, Accidental Death of an Anarchist has since become one of Fo's best known and translated texts. Based on a true-life story it throws in to relief the judicial and police corruption of 1970s Italy. Simon Nye's superb translation brings out the parallels with our situation today in witty, contemporary dialogue.

the Italians call it autoriduzione. We call it stealing. But Dario Fo's 1974 farce was a response (or possibly an incitement) to the wave of popular protest that began with a group of Fiat workers refusing to pay increased bus fares and led to a whole sector of society helping itself. - Hickling, Guardian.

Franca Rame wrote and performed LA MEDEA & LO STUPRO [THE RAPE] in the 1970s at the height of second-wave feminism in morally restrictive Italy, which was also going through a period of mounting social upheaval. The plays were created to raise awareness of women's situation in the society of the time, but are just as relevant four decades later. Human trafficking, physical and sexual violence, psychological abuse, sexual slavery, honour-killings, genital mutilation, education restrictions, financial inequality, corporate glass-ceilings, age-invisibility... the list of social oppressions perpetrated against women is as extensive as ever in our current society, ranging from the third world to the first world.

Low Pay? Don't Pay!

An uproarious new version of Dario Fo's frenetic farce Can't Pay? Won't Pay! which, although set in Italy, has an all too familiar ring to it. Housewives Antonia and Margherita, fed up with high prices in the supermarket, take matters into their own hands and start shoplifting. Keen to keep their light-fingered antics from their husbands, Giovanni and Luigi - not to mention the police - the women are forced to resort to more and more inventive hiding places, and more and more elaborate cover stories, in this legendary comedy. Nobel prize winner Dario Fo is Italy's leading contemporary playwright, renowned for his hilarious satires including Accidental Death of an Anarchist. He has re-written his classic farce Can't Pay? Won't Pay! to take into account the global banking crisis and this translation, by world-leading Fo scholar Joseph Farrell, hints at UK current affairs too, including the credit crunch and MPs' expenses scandal. Although first written in 1970, this updated farce is still very relevant to today's state of affairs

While her husband Luigi sleeps on, she leaps out of bed, changes the babys nappy ready for the nursery, panics about the loss of her door-key, and has to change the nappy again. She complains that, while she has a full-time job in the factory, she also has to do all the housework and child care. Luigi, who was spoilt by his mother, is penitent and has said that he will change. As she is about to rush out, she suddenly makes a joyous discovery...
