Synopsis: | Ollie Figg's a clever writer, too, though Contested Will doesn't show much more than cleverness for the fun of it. He has a very easy way with witty words, has written a first play that passes a very happy hour, and may well come up with something seriously interesting in the future. Give me the facile Mr Figg any time, ahead of the mindblowingly presumptuous earnestness of Maeve Murphy, writer, director, and lead in The Miracle People, which followed Figg at the Etcetera. It was all too reminiscent of another mini-holocaust at the same venue last year. Strong feelings and a tendency to purple prose are not all it takes to be a playwright, let alone throw light on the fundamental horrors of our brutal Europe. - Theatre Record | |||||
