STEPHEN FIFE - (playwright) Samuel French has just published his plays Break of Day (about Vincent van Gogh and his family) and Savage World (about a white journalist's attempt to prove an African-American athlete has been framed). These join his evening of romantic comedies, This Is Not What I Ordered, also published by French. His new play, Blue Kiss, was produced in the 2013 Hollywood Fringe, where one critic called it "well on its way to becoming an American masterpiece," while another wrote it is "a sly and brilliant conundrum." His other new play, The American Wife - co-written with Ralph Pezzullo, about a woman whose husband is arrested as an enemy combatant - was chosen by HB Playwrights in New York City for their fall 2013 reading series. Other plays: Sizzle Sizzle, Mickey's Home, Scattered Blossoms (about the drama of van Gogh and Gauguin and a woman they are involved with, as viewed through the lens of a Kabuki narrator). His adaptation of Sholem Asch's play God of Vengeance was produced by the Jewish Repertory Theatre in NYC, then later in Tel Aviv (in Hebrew) and in Atlanta, where it was directed by Joseph Chaikin. Steve wrote about this in his memoir BEST REVENGE: How the Theater Saved My Life and Has Been Killing Me Ever Since (CUNE Press). He also writes screenplays, including adaptations of his plays Blue Kiss and Sizzle Sizzle, both to directed and produced by Yuval Shrem. (Blue Kiss is scheduled to shoot this summer.) His original screenplay The Falling Man has won several awards. Steve co-founded and ran The Young Actors Workshop in Venice for five years, directing kids 7-15 in original musicals he wrote for them, including Charming and Young Forever. (Young Forever was also performed by teens in Tokyo.) He also co-edited a book of Monologues for Kids ("Playing With A Purpose") for Applause Books. He is currently editing A Monologue Book and a Scene Book, both for Mature Actors - for Applause. He has written Arts feature pieces for The New York Times, New Republic, Village Voice, New York Newsday, American Theatre. Steve is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College & Columbia's School of the Arts (MFA), He was the first literary manager for Primary Stages Company (NYC) and continues to consult privately.

Research:    Member of the Dramatists Guild of America (as at 2015)

Savage World

Savage World
Solomon Eisner, a former freelance journalist is trying to find a way to repair his broken relationship with his bi-racial son Danny. Sol has tried to protect Danny from a dangerous past, but now he decides to videotape himself telling about this dark chapter from his youth that led to Dannys birth. The play dramatizes Sols attempt to save his son from a descent into violence, as Sol travels back to the 1970s, chronicling his quest to prove the innocence of Savage James, an outspoken black boxer who has been convicted of murdering a Jewish couple during the Newark riots. The play alternates between these two realities (the 1970s and the present), as Sol tries to rediscover the thread of belief and conviction that can give his son an understanding of events that Sol himself has not been able to come to terms with.
