Biographies In A Bag         Heart And Sole         Plan, The         Turns Of The Tide

Biographies In A Bag

Synopsis:
In This thoughtful, gentle show, three actress-writers - Donna air, Rachel Ogilvy and Lynn Ferguson (two per night, so who you see depends on when you go) - tell short stories based on their own lives and those of three famous figures from the past. First up, for me, was Donna air, all dazzling leggy beauty and down-to-earth Geordie charm, to tell the story of her own happy life, from childhood in Gateshead to family life with her partner, the wildlife conservationist and orangutan expert Damien aspinall. Donna's chosen celebrity is King Kong star Fay Wray, who died last week aged 96. But apart from that weird piece of synchronicity, what her story mainly demonstrates is that uninterrupted happiness is a poor subject for Drama. although Rachel Ogilvy's story of her failed first marriage is a sadder one, intercut with plucky extracts from the autobiography of Doris Day, in Dramatic terms it's not much stronger, too eager to be liked to cut to the hard stuff of why relationships fail. Lynn Ferguson's monologue, though, is different, a memorably brave and moving piece about a woman who, coming to motherhood late in life, finds herself terrified to the point of insanity by the danger, evil and misery in the world; in extremis, she has turned to the works of the pessimistic philosopher Schopenhauer and is threatening to write a biography of him. as with all Ferguson's work, there are moments of sublime observational comedy here, not least on the subject of mother-and-baby clinics. But at its core, this is a brilliant piece of writing, magnificently performed, about an outwardly tough woman made utterly vulnerable by motherhood and struggling to adapt to the new world of openness and fear in which she must live. It makes you want to weep, with pity and with joy; individually, it would merit four stars, but it needs a stronger counterweight in the other half of the show to display it to best advantage. - Scotsman
