Notes: | an adaptation of William Butler Yeats' Cuchulain Plays
Synopsis: | Yeats wrote six plays about the mythical Ulster hero, Cuchulain, over a thirty-five year period, but did not intend them as a cycle; Sword Against the Sea, however, effectively combines them into one and makes them stylistically consistent. Dance, music and maskwork add richness to the already beautiful poetry of the text in which elements of Greek tragedy and Noh theatre are ingeniously fused; the adapter has also used some of Yeats' poems to link and end scenes. The resulting text is close to the spirit of the original works and the author's larger intentions while making a playable, satisfying whole.
