"I received my musical education at the Conservatory of Music in Leningrad. Back in Russia I was an editor of the newspaper V Polyet for four years, and published numerous pieces of poetry and other articles. I happened to be a participant of the migration of Jewish people from Russia, which you can compare with exodus of Jews from Egypt or expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492. American public is largely unaware of these events so I set up my goal to make the story known."

Solo On Sax         Story Of Esther, The

Solo On Sax

Synopsis:
Overture. A melody on a sax is interrupted by rock music. An energetic dance in front of the curtain. Act 1. Scene 1. Boring. Paula is having a lesson. A teacher shows something on the whiteboard, but Paula is too bored to pay attention. In the window she can see kids playing the ball outside. She is all with them, helping her friends to win. The teacher catches her distracted and reprimands. Paula is trying to concentrate, but it's too boring for her and other kids in the class. Reprise. I wish I could run away. Scene 2. Grandfather. Paula is at home with Leon. The grandfather is furious that Paula could not find him on the parking lot, when he came to pick her up after school. Instead she went to the school office and called the grandmother. Obviously, the grandmother explained it all to her husband. Paula has to listen that she is a bad student, brings the not-good-enough grades, late for school in the morning, and now failed to find her grandfather's car. Reprise. Paula with her pet hamster. I wish I could run away from this all.

Notes:
Written by Victor And Ilana Eydus. Completed in 2006, Solo on Sax is about teenagers today, their problems and desires. Set in a fictitious town in sunny California, these kids believe Arnold Schwarzenegger, invest in the stock market, enjoy life, and don't want to work. With a lot of subtle humor (but no pie throwing), it is a fun and easy show.

Story Of Esther, The

Synopsis:
Esya (short for Esther in Russian) Levite is a student of the University of Leningrad. A friend brings her to an underground Jewish group that studies Hebrew in preparation for emigration from Russia. While Esya is not interested in studying the language and feels quite detached from her national culture, she wants to participate in a Purimspiel, a theatrical performance based on the Book of Esther. She is given the leading role of Queen Esther. Sergey, a young computer engineer, volunteers for the role of Modecai. The group wants to set forth the non-orthodox version of the Scroll of Esther, including the episodes typically not shown. They start with the downfall of Queen Vashti, then move on to the scene where the young maiden Esther (the same age as Esya) expresses her desire to marry the king of Persia and become a queen. She does not care much about her Jewish identity, and craves the luxurious life of the royal palace. As Esya and Sergey practice their roles, they fall in love with each other. Meanwhile the Soviet secret police learns about the performance. The Russian authorities see the celebration of a religious holiday as an act of civil disobedience&

Notes:
Music by Victor Eydus; lyrics by Victor Eydus; book by Victor Eydus. The events of this musical belong to history. A very recent history, yet it happened in a world which is gone. There is no Leningrad on the map; the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics has collapsed; what used to be republics are neither Soviet nor Socialist any more. As it always happens in Jewish history, things get turned upside down. As a participant and witness of this modern exodus, I feel obligated to provide testimony* to it. While the names and the particular sequence of the scenes are fictitious, the actual events happened to somebody I know personally or were told to me by an eyewitness.
