Synopsis: | Annie Fox a rising West End actress is appearing in a very successful play - not having anywhere to live she is camping out in her dressing room. She just has time to hide her boyfriend in his boxer shorts when her Mother comes in unannounced. Her Mother tells her that someone they knew in the War will be coming to see her, Henry Rattner had lived in the same street as they had but had been evacuated to America. Annie to somewhere in England. She was six at the time and does not have clear memories of it all. Having got rid of her Mother she extricates her boyfriend Paddy from the cupboard. Paddy is an actor too and is starring in a play in the next door theatre. Later on Annie is told that the play will be transferring to Broadway and that she will be going with it. She telephones her Mother with the news. Various friends turn up - Sarah who designs Annie's clothes, Griffith the set designer, Mrs Turner her dresser, Willy a self oppressed gay man. Willy has brought a friend, John with him to cheer him up as John has just lost a bye-election.And to add to the crush Harry turns up too - but he has an atack of sneezing and leaves.Paddy arrives with flowers. Paddy is not very happy with the news that Annie is going to New York. He proposes to Annie - who is thrown by the offer. But she agrees to marry Paddy and turn down the Broadway job. Then Paddy is offered a seemingly great part in a movie - to be filmed on location in Israel. Annie is upset that he did not tell her about it before accepting the part and that he automatically assumes she will come with him. They quarrel and part. American Equity turn down Annie as they say an American actor could easily do the part. Paddy discovers the role is so small that is not worth doing. When the couple next meet they both pretend to have turned down the offers to stay with each other - but the truth will out. | |||||
