Born in London, Martin trained as a Stage Manager at LAMDA. He was an actor for 20 years, appearing on film, TV and theatres all over the UK. From 1994-1999, Martin was Artistic Director of Nottingham Playhouse where he directed works by Gogol, Brecht, Goldoni, Molierè and Beckett. His productions toured to festivals in Romania, Italy, France, Germany, Ireland and Japan. From 2002-2005, Martin was Co-Artistic Director of Chichester Festival Theatre. His productions there were: Cole Porter's OUT OF THIS WORLD, HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR, I CAUGHT MY DEATH IN VENICE (by & with the Brothers Marquez) and Botho Strauss' SEVEN DOORS. Other productions include: MAN OF LA MANCHA (Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh); THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW (Munich and Milan); THE BLACKS (Market Theatre, Johannesburg); THE COMEDY OF ERRORS (Maxim Gorki Theater, Berlin); THE BREASTS OF TIRESIAS, THE BALD PRIMA DONNA, MOZART AND SALIERI (Crucible Studio, Sheffield); SCHOOL FOR CLOWNS (Lilian Baylis Theatre, London); the Chromolume Sequence in SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE (National Theatre); Associate Director on The Pet Shop Boys' 1991 PERFORMANCE Tour. Martin directed and co-wrote the scenario of the World Première of THE NUTCRACKER (Matthew Bourne/Opera North, Edinburgh International Festival). As Director & Co-writer of The National Theatre of Brent: THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (Kilburn Tricycle, 1987 Edinburgh Festival and BBC Radio), THE FRENCH REVOLUTION (BBC TV), ALL THE WORLD'S A GLOBE (BBC Radio - Sony Radio Award Winner), THE WONDER OF SEX (National Theatre), LOVE UPON THE THRONE (Comedy Theatre), THE ARTS AND HOW THEY WAS DONE, THE MESSIAH, THE MONA LISA (Sony Radio Award Winner) (all BBC Radio). In 1990 he was invited by Opera North to direct his first opera production - a double-bill of L'HEURE ESPAGNOLE and GIANNI SCHICCHI.
