| Synopsis: | This story is about Samuel Johnson's involvement with Reverend William Dodd, sentenced to hang for forging a banknote, and forgiven by the victim. Johnson is enlisted by Dodd's supporters to use his gift with the written word to save Dodd's skin, an odd request given that Johnson was known to have said the gallows was a necessary thing. In his own final hours in 1784, Johnson relives his greatest failure, his inability to save Dodd's life. Johnson's wise old ghost is our host. | |||||
