Iron Moon

Synopsis:
Iron Moon tells the story of a rural Southern family of misfits desperately seeking to connect with God and each other. It is the story of their collective journey toward redemption. The play is semi-biographical as it is inspired from real-life events in Mr. Dean's own family. In the surrealistic haze of a dream the action of the play leaps in and out of reality, from 1939 to the present and from poetry to prose leaving the audience mesmerized. although the play has a religious tone it is not for the faint of heart - as it puts faith to the test and reminds us of the potential horror of our own collective morality.

Gabriel Jason Dean
From the initial pool of over 850 submissions, the Final Forty plays were chosen to be performed over a period of one week. a panel of judges comprised of celebrity playwrights, theatrical agents and artistic directors nominated one or more of each evening's plays as finalists. The final round was then held on the last day of the festival. Out of these plays, six winners were chosen by Samuel French, Inc. to receive publication and licensing contracts.

Qualities Of Starlight

Synopsis:
Theo Turner is a young, prolific astronomer, living with his wife in California, on the verge of publishing a cosmological theory that would blow apart the foundations of modern astronomy. But Theo's "big bang" isn't just theoretical. Theo's universe explodes when he and his barren wife, Polly, travel back to the appalachian South to visit his aging parents and deliver the news that the State of California has approved them for adoption, pending interviews with his parents. In the three short years since Theo has seen his parents, they've drifted light years away from their son-the aging couple has a rampant addiction to crystal meth. While Theo's father, Junior, is in constant denial about their addiction, Theo's mother, Rose, plunges into a heavy, but hilarious, methinduced psychosis filled with hissing lizards, Elvis impersonations and grown men in baby diapers. Qualities of Starlight is a weighty modern comedy that presents a new picture of the contemporary South. It's a story about the frailty of faith, the unspoken bonds of family and the ethereal expansion of the universe.

Apart from very popular and world touring productions, many performing arts events are largely forgotten about in a matter of months. Traces may remain in various collections, but few collecting agencies, such as libraries, catalogue each flyer or program individually. Hence, unless one knows that an event took place at a certain time in a certain place, tracking down such an event as part of a research project is often a matter of chance. Where research needs to be carried out on high profile and well-documented productions only, this is not a problem. However, both the historian and the analyst will attest that the cultural, political, or sociological context in which a performing arts event takes place is also of major importance, as are the other events that took place in close proximity, either in place or time. A good overview of such productions provides us with a 'social document' that can greatly enhance cultural studies in ways that extend far beyond the narrow confines of theatre history. For instance, data such as this can be used to monitor the health of communities, particularly when used in association with data obtained from other social science disciplines. When one researches a particular playwright one might want to know about all the productions of plays by that author; if one wants to investigate what choices a particular audience had over a period of history and compare this to, say, an ethnic breakdown of the population, one would need to know broadly all the events that took place during that time. If one wanted to do a statistical analysis on the shift in popularity of a genre over one or more generations, it is important to have knowledge of most of the relevant major and minor performance events that took place. In this context, issues of aesthetic quality and the professionalism of a production - which will of course have an impact on such studies - are not the determining factors when deciding to include or exclude events, since all events are the raw material for such research.
